Over the past few years I have been collecting the names from the war memorials of Sutherland and also searching through databases, rolls of honour, old newspapers etc. for information on those who had a connection with Sutherland who have died in the wars of the 20th Century. Jock Bruce very kindly shared a lot of his research on the Sutherland men of the 5th Seaforths with me a few years ago.

I will post all the data I have onto the formum split into manageable chunks.

There are men listed here who enlisted in Golspie, the HQ of 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders and have no connection to Sutherland other than that they enlisted in the county so they may well be listed on other Scottish war memorials.

I have also added those listed on the Reay and Edderton memorials. although one was is in Caithness and the other in Ross & Cromarty they are so closely connected to their nearest Sutherland communities and shared so many names it was worth including them as well.

I will update this list if I find out any more information and I would welcome any other information about these men and women. There are likely to be some errors in these entries so if you see any wrong names or places of birth etc. please let me know.

Can I make a correction to your lists. Golspie War Memorial - I have two great uncles listed: You have my great grandfather's name as John - his name was William. So your listings should read:

Rank: Acting Regimental Sergeant Major
Regimental Number: 10537

Many thanks for pointing out the wrong name and adding the extra information. I’m afraid I don’t have time at the moment to fill in all the gaps so I’m relying on kind souls like yourself letting me know. I’ve changed my original post with the information you’ve provided.

I should have had A/RSM Munro’s place of burial in already, I’ve got most of them from the CWGC database but there are a few still to get.

The Scottish National War Memorial has Sgt William Munro’s place of birth as Clyne. If you can get a copy of his birth certificate you should send it to the SNWM to get them to change it to Tain. The Army must have had Wm Munro’s place of birth as Clyne. I wonder if he provided that himself or if it was a clerical error?

If you have any photographs of your uncles it would be good if they can be posted on the Golspie War Memorial thread.

Thanks again. Let me know if you see anything else which needs updating.

Kind Regards

Adam

I wasn't sure how to post photos to the Golspie War Memorial thread so I have added the photos to my own profile. John Alexander Munro on the left and William Munro on the right.

Many thanks

Thanks for taking the time to post the images. We have a thread on the forum about posting images here:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=470

Perhaps if you look through that it may give you some tips because it would be good to get these images on the Golspie thread.

Kind regards

Adam

Hi, I have uploaded three photos but I am not sure about them being attached to the "Golspie" thread. Hope they are ok.

Thanks for posting the photographs, they are really good images. There's a huge difference to that part of Golspie since the photo was taken.

What I actually meant though was to post them all in the Golspie thread rather than seperately.

I have sent you a message about it. If you copy the images into the Golspie thread I can then delete the other posts to avoid confusion.

Regards

Adam

Couple of points re your entry for John Murrary Robertson, his age at date of death was 36 and he is buried at Potijze Chateau Lawn Cemetery, Belgium, grave C 4. Also listed in Edinburgh Univ roll of honour.

Was interested to see his parents lived in Elgin.

A very good piece of work.
