This trio of memorials are posted together because they form one logical memorial all located at Cummertrees Parish Church.
OS Map Ref: NY 140 664
(edit by spoons - Revised OS Ref (by GPS) NY 14010 66442)

UKNIWM Ref: 44108 is the Lychgate outside the church. This is in a very poor state, the wood is rotten right through in several places and there are some pieces missing. If you want to see it, get in quick because I don't think it will be there for many more years - it looks to be a massive job to repair it and I do not think that it will be allowed to become dangerous.

UKNIWM Ref: 44110 is the WW1 memorial and is in the outside church wall behind the lychgate.

UKNIWM Ref: 44111 is the WW2 memorial and is also on the outside wall of the church.

I visited this memorial today and found that a substantial renovation had been done since I last visited. This was good to see as it was in great danger of falling down. Although the repairs are obvious, the memorial now looks great and is a credit to those involved in the renovation.

The lychgate is made of Oak with half-height sandstone walls and red clay tiled roof. It is cat C (S) listed. It was constructed in the 1920s with oak provided by Colonel Charles Brook whose family owned the Hoddom and Kinmount estates. It was paid for Kirk Session and was unveiled by Major William Murray OBE of Murraythwaite who was MP for Dumfriesshire at the time.

In 2007 the War Memorials Trust provided a grant of £1500 towards the renovation. Decayed timber was replaced with locally grown green oak, a damp course was installed to help avoid future problems and the wood was treated.

I was drawn to the rather unusual name on the WW2 plaque:

Name: NORGAARD, CHRISTIAN CHARLES
Initials: C C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Army Service Corps
Unit Text: "G" 31 Supply Depot
Age: 27
Date of Death: between 26/04/1941 and 27/04/1941
Service No: 124994
Additional information: Son of Christian and Sarah Ann Atkinson Norgaard, of Gateshead, Co. Durham. B.Com., A.C.A.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Face 8.
Memorial: ATHENS MEMORIAL

Not sure why he's commemorated here.

Were the Norgaard family owners of a local estate perhaps?

Also note that there isn't an exact date of death. These dates tie in with the evacuation of Crete.

I visited this memorial yesterday and the 2007 repairs have weathered in nicely. You almost can't see the join.

The D&G Standard 22/7/1942 p.3 reported that:
Mrs Rebecca Sanderson Young wife of the late Charles Young of Newcastle and Gateshead died at her daughter's home at 8 Ellerslie, Powfoot. (Cummertrees). Her two daughters are Mrs Riseborough of Powfoot and Mrs Norgaard of Gateshead.

So it looks like Christian's aunt is the connection to Cummertrees.

Christian Charles Norgaard – age 27 – Second Lieutenant (124994) "G" 31 Supply Depot, Royal Army Service Corps.
Christian was commissioned from the Officer Producing Centre, R.A.S.C. in March 1940. He was killed when the Dutch troopship “Slamat” and the destroyers Diamond and Wryneck sank as a result of air attacks by Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 87 dive bombers during the evacuation of British, Australian and New Zealand troops from mainland Greece.
Born 1914 in Gateshead, County Durham. Son of Christian and Sarah Ann Atkinson (Young) Norgaard, of 11 Wilson Street Dunston, Gateshead, Co. Durham.
Date of Death: Between 26/04/1941 and 27/04/1941
Memorial: ATHENS MEMORIAL

Charlie Young's of Newcastle and Gateshead was (is?) a well known Kosher Butchers which (on at least one advert) sold chickens from Dumfriesshire.
Is this what Mr Riseborough was upto?????
