David

For the United Free Church of Scotland panel can you check on the original image if there is a Matthew Marshall listed?

Regards

Thanks Adam - I just looked at these photos and can quite clearly see Matthew Marshall - I must have been thinking about peeling tatties again!

Tatties, I thought it must be carrots to see the names on the right. I see he's actually on the left though!

It wouldn't do any harm to get a clear image of the names on the right anyway.

Cheers

Rev. George Condie

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 06.07.1918
DEATH OF REV. GEORGE CONDIE, MUTHILL PARISH CHURCH

A feeling of painful surprise and regret prevailed in Muthill and Crieff districts on Monday when the news was received that the Rev. George Condie B.D., parish minister of Muthill, had passed away the previous night (Sunday) in Cromarty Hospital. Mr Condie was laid down for four days with influenza in Nigg Camp, where he had been stationed as a chaplain for the past three months, and, taking a relapse on Saturday last, he never rallied, but died the following evening at the early age of 45. Mrs Condie was notified by wire, and she left for the North on Sunday morning, and was able to be with her husband at the end.
Mr Condie was educated at Hutchison's Grammar School, Glasgow, and the University of that city. He widened his experience by teaching for some three years in the training ship "Empress". During his university career he took a distinguished place in Divinity, and among other prizes he carried off the coveted Dowanhill prize for elocution. His first charge was the parish of Stepps, where he laboured for eight years. In December, 1912, he was inducted to the Parish Church of Muthill. He took an active interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of the parish. His energy and large-heartedness won general admiration. Natural gifts of mind and a forceful personality made a place for him in the community, while his hearty and breezy manner endeared him to all of his friends. He was a member of the School Board, the chaplain of St. John's Lodge (No. 1920) of Freemasons, an assistant Scoutmaster, and president of the Muthill Bowling Club. On the outbreak of war, Mr Condie took an active interest in the formation of the local Volunteer Platoon, and was ultimately gazetted second lieutenant. From the time of receiving a commission as a chaplain he was stationed at Nigg, and was held in much esteem by the officers and men.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

An impressive memorial service was held in the parish Church on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a large congregation of parishioners of all denominations, and representatives of all the public bodies. The Presbytery of Auchterarder attended, and the Rev. A. Campbell, M.A., Crieff, Moderator of Presbytery, presided. The service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Campbell; the Rev. A.B. Wann, D.D., Comrie; the Rev. R.P.R. Anderson, M.A., Muthill United Free Church; and the Rev. H.H. Murray, B.D., Monzie. Mr J.D. Turner, F.R.C.O., Crieff presided at the organ, and at the close of the service the "Dead March" in "Saul" was played. The coffin was carried to the manse by six Freemasons.
On Thursday, the body, which was brought from Cromarty Military Hospital on Tuesday, was taken from Muthill to Glasgow, and interred in Cathcart Cemetery. There was a large representation of the Kirk-Session and other friends; while Captain Housley attended as the representative of the Scottish Command. A number of lovely wreaths were sent by friends, among them one from the officers in Nigg Camp, and one from Muthill Kirk-Session. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. J.A.C. M'Kellar, B.D., Cathcart Parish Church, who is also to preach in Muthill on Sunday first.
The Parish Church and United Free Church congregations are to continue to worship together for the present under Mr Anderson, and by arrangement by the two Kirk-Sessions, the services are to be held in the Parish Church until further notice.
After the memorial service a meeting of the Presbytery was held - Rev. A. Campbell, Crieff, Moderator. The rev. R.P.R. Anderson, U.F. Church, Muthill (who had been conducting the joint services in the Parish and U.F. Church during the late Mr Condie's absence) was associated with the Presbytery. The Rev. Mr Campbell was appointed moderator during the vacancy, and the charge will be declared vacant tomorrow.
The Muthill living is understood to be one of the best in the Presbytery of Auchterarder.

Rev. Charles Robertson

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 19.10.1918
PERTH CHAPLAIN DIES OF WOUNDS

Rev. Charles Robertson, St. Andrew's Parish Church, Perth, who has been acting as a chaplain with the Forces at Salonika, has died of wounds. He enlisted in the R.A.M.C. about two years ago, and went to Salonika, where, after a year's service, he became a chaplain. He was a son of Mr Hope Robertson, Innernytie, Stanley, and went to St. Andrew's, Perth about ten years ago.

Rev. William Urquhart

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 26.08.1916
PERTHSHIRE MINISTER FALLS

Lieutenant William Urquhart, Black Watch, the Parish Minister of Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire, has given his life for King and country. Intimation of the casualty was received in a telegram from the War Office, and caused feelings of the deepest regret in the district generally.
Lieutenant Urquhart was ordained in Kinloch Rannoch, in, 1913, and was a native of Aberdeenshire. He was trained at Aberdeen College, taking the Degree of M.A. and B.D. He had, when a student, served a term with the Scottish Horse, and when war broke out took a very active part in recruiting in the district. He ultimately responded to the call for men himself, and though refused leave of absence by the Presbytery on the first asking was subsequently released for military duties, and became a private in the Royal Scots in the spring of 1915. He afterwards received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Black Watch, promotion to a lieutenancy following. Lieutenant Urquhart had been at the front for about a year, and while home in May was married. Lieutenant Urquhart, prior to coming to Kinloch Rannoch, held two assistantships. In the Rannoch district he was held in high esteem not only be his own congregation, but by the community generally. He had taken a very warm interest in local affairs and was a Scoutmaster. He was about 30 years of age.

Matthew Marshall, listed on the left side panel (II. Probationers and Students of Divinity) is also commemorated on Causewayhead & Cambuskenneth Civic Memorial

See: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1227

And Stirling Civic Memorial

See: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=59

Name: MARSHALL, MATTHEW
Initials: M
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Age: 27
Date of Death: 11/08/1918
Additional information: Son of John and Crissie Marshall, of Dunard, Stirling.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. C. 60.
Cemetery: BOUCHOIR NEW BRITISH CEMETERY

This info was highlighted by DerekR. His friend had visited Bouchoir Cemetery in France during August 2008, and observed that there was a bunch of fresh red roses on Matthew Marshall's grave - exactly 90 years from when he died.

Obviously someone still cares to remember.

Lovely memorial.

If memory serves me right, was there not a book written on some of the Chaplains etc who died in the Great War?

I thought that Derek may have stumbled on a glaring ommission here regarding Andrew Stewart (might still have?).

Here is a link to Andrew Stewart's biography from Glasgow University. It indicates he trained in the United Free Church so his name 'should' be on the right hand side of the board;

Derek, there were two publications, one produced in 1915 which listed all those serving at the time and a follow up publication in 1919 which expanded this list to detail those who had died.

Anyone researching this memorial should start with the 1919 publication.

"Sons of the Manse Muster Roll" (1915) - The Mitchell Library and the Edinburgh City Library have copies

"Muster Roll of the Manse" (1919) - The Mitchell Library has a copy

I would think all the men listed on then St Giles memorial would also be on university memorials and in their rolls of honour.
