The Galloway News of 29 August has the following:
A special flypast of classic British aircraft has been arranged to pay tribute to one of the last survivors of the Battle of Britain.
A Spitfire and a Hurricane – the famous World War Two fighter planes – will swoop over the Stewartry next month.
And they will salute Wing Commander Roger Morewood, 97, who now lives at Barlochan House in Palnackie, having lived for 35 years in Rockcliffe before that.
One of his old friends from Rockcliffe, Gavin Fox, set up the tribute.
Gavin said: “It’s a long story but one of my friends knows the squadron leader. They’re performing at Leuchars that day and are going to flypast on the way back.
“There won’t be a Lancaster but there will be a Spitfire and a Hurricane, which is what Roger flew during the war. We set it up as a surprise for Roger and he was thrilled when we told him.”
Roger joined the RAF in 1937 and trained on Gloster Gladiators, joining 56 Squadron of Hurricanes when war broke out. He also flew Bristol Beaufighters, a developed version of the Blenheim bomber, and is one of the oldest living pilots from the Battle of Britain, if not the oldest.
The two planes are due to fly over Barlochan at 2.50pm on Sunday, September 8 – weather permitting. They will fly past three times and on the third pass will waggle their wings in salute. _________________ Ken |
