An exhibition at the St Mungo Museum of Religeous Life and Art in Glasgow until 5th April 2015
This poignant exhibition looks at the memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War I. This exhibition will run until 5 April 2015.
2014 marks the centenary of the start of World War I. By the time the war officially ended in 1919 more than 900,000 British soldiers had been killed. Over 18,000 of the war dead came from Glasgow. To commemorate them, memorials were set up across the city. Some, like the cenotaph in George Square, are famous landmarks, but most are less well known although just as important.
This photographic exhibition features memorials from across Glasgow. They range from simple plaques to grand public monuments and stained glass windows. Most were set up by organizations including military regiments, faith groups, businesses, schools and social clubs. A few also mark the important role that women played, both as field nurses and munitions workers.
War memorials link the past to the present and are still a focus for Remembrance Day ceremonies and special anniversaries. The exhibition also considers the many different ways in which these memorials are held. |

There is something wrong with the link which doesn't let us show the URL in a post on this forum.
It's easy enough to find details about the exhibition if you Google it.
Thanks
