ORMISTON, DAVID, SAPPER, R.E.
David Ormiston – age 29 – Sapper (42634) 73rd Field Company, Royal Engineers.
David had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Selkirk and he lived in Scott's Place in Selkirk when he enlisted. He landed with his company, as part of the 15th (Scottish) Division, at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (Johnstone) Ormiston (died 1900) and of the late Charles Cowan Ormiston (died 1908) of Galashiels.
Missing in Action – 26 September 1915.
Commonwealth War Grave – Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.


RUTHERFORD, WALTER, PRIVATE, K.O.S.B.
Walter Dickson Rutherford – age 20 – Private (7036) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was a yarn storeman at Dunsdale Mills in Selkirk when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Selkirk. Son of David and Jessie Anderson (Thomson) Rutherford of 43 Back Row, Selkirk.
Missing in Action – 12 July 1915.
Commonwealth War Grave – Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


WALLIS, WILLIAM, PRIVATE, K.O.S.B.
William Wallis – age 26 – Private (6726) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a millworker when he enlisted August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He suffered wounds from an exploding bomb and after treatment at the 17th Stationary Hospital at Cape Helles he was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died a week later.
Born 1889 in Morley, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Son of Frederick William and Polly (Shelton) Wallis of 10 Raeburn Place, Selkirk.
Husband of Marion (Scott) Wallis of 51 Curror Street, Selkirk who he married in 1911 in Selkirk.
Died of Wounds – 18 December 1915.
Commonwealth War Grave – Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the St. John's Episcopal Church memorial in Selkirk.
His brothers Ben Shelton Wallis and James Edward Wallis also fell.


MILLAR, ALEXANDER, SERGEANT, A. & S.H.
Alexander Millar – age 28 – Sergeant (S/2812) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alexander was a wool spinner when he enlisted in August 1914. He joined the 1st Argylls in France as Lance Corporal in May 1915 but he contracted pneumonia and was evacuated to East Suffolk & Ipswich Hospital in October. It was May 1916 before he was released from hospital and he served as Corporal with the 3rd Reserve Battalion until he was posted to the 10th Battalion in France in January 1917. Alexander was promoted to Sergeant in August but he was killed two months later.
Born 1889 in Selkirk. Son of Robert and Jane (Laidlaw) Millar of 51 Buccleuch Road, Selkirk.
Killed in Action – 12 October 1917.
Commonwealth War Grave – Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.
His brother Robert also fell.


CURRIE, JOHN, PRIVATE, K.O.S.B.
John Currie – age 33 – Private (6723) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was woollen warper in Selkirk when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1881 in Selkirk. Son of Thomas and Dinah (Laidlaw) Currie of 2a Bleachfield Road and of Scott Crescent, Selkirk.
Missing in Action – 12 July 1915.
Commonwealth War Grave – Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk Parish Church memorial.


Two brothers, the sons of late Alexander Rae and of Catherine (Scott) Rae of 23 Dunsdale Road, Selkirk.

RAE, JOHN S., CORPORAL, K.O.S.B.
John Scott Rae – age 38 – Corporal (6722) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a woollen warper when he enlisted in August 1914. He had previously served with the Volunteers and the Territorials and he was made Corporal in March 1915. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1877 in Kinning Park, Glasgow.
Missing in Action – 12 July 1915.
Commonwealth War Grave – Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk West United Free Church memorial.


RAE, WALTER S., PRIVATE, K.O.S.B.
Walter Scott Rae – age 31 – Private (200995) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter had enlisted in the 4th KOSB Reserve and was posted to the 1st KOSB.
Born 1886 in Cathcart, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action – 19 August 1918.
Commonwealth War Grave – Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Selkirk West United Free Church memorial.
