I'm curious to see if anyone can find any concrete evidence that the original figure of a kilted soldier was actually that unpopular. The earliest mention I can see of its unpopularity is from 1939, when it was mentioned that "it may not be the most beautiful piece of architecture of its type" but before that I can find no mention of it being unpopular in the local newspapers.

Can anyone local shed any light on where these stories might have first originated?
