This grey granite cross with celtic wheel head stands at the entrance gate, within the churchyard, of the parish church on the Main Street, Alexandria.
The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 5640, Alexandria, Grey cross, Erected April 1921, DayBook 295.

Jim

That's a lot of names for a church memorial. One of the names is a man I have listed in my posts on Sutherland soldiers. He is already listed on quite a few memorials in Sutherland. His wife was from Alexandria.

GILMOUR Allan
Rank: Captain
Unit: 'D' Coy. 10th (Lovat Scouts) Bn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
Died: Died of wounds 16.12.17 (Wounded 24.10.17 at Salmah, Macedonia)
Age: 28
Parents: William E. and Jessie Gertrude Gilmour
Spouse: Mary (MacDonald) Gilmour of Woodbank, Alexandria (m. Aug. 1915)
Son: Allan (Later Colonel Sir Allan Gilmour KCVO MC of Rosehall)
Born: N/K
Home: N/K
Job: Connected to the United Turkey Red Company Ltd.
Commissioned: 1.8.14. Promoted to Captain 12.5.16
Notes: Formerly 2nd Lovat Scouts
Medals: N/K
Buried: Lahana Military Cemetery, Greece
Memorials: Listed on the Durness War Memorial, the Kincardine and Croick War Memorial, Ardgay, the Rosehall War Memorial, Creich, and the Strathy War Memorial, Farr
Commemorated on the Glasgow Sutherland Association Plaque, Dornoch Cathedral
Commemorated by the Gilmour Piping Medal

Do you know if the main memorial in Alexandria has names on it? It would be interesting to know if Captain Gilmour is on that one as well.

I've just answered my own question. Your post on Bonhill has Capt Gilmour's name and that of a couple of others listed. above I take it Bonhill is Alexandria and District's memorial and is located in Bonhill.

I'll edit your post to incude Alexandria in the title.

Regards

Adam

This memorial now lies in Balloch by the wall of the big white church by the roundabout. The WM was moved from the former Alexandria Parish Church in Alexandria. I believe the church in Balloch was called the United Reform but is now called Alexandria Parish Church.
