I finally got back to photograph the missing WW2 panel, and while I was at it, take a better shot of the monument now that the roadworks have finished.

Nice update and a very nice memorial in a good setting. I notice the Second World War names for the King's Own Scottish Borderers are KOSBs rather than KOSB, a nice little touch.

From the Second World War names young Robert Hutchison was a Cabin Boy lost on the Convoy Rescue vessel SS 'Stockport'

Anne - this "Gordon" is also named on the Parton Parish War Memorial, on an individual plaque and on the memorial in the church; on the village Roll of Honour and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.

James Murray Hannah – age 33 – Lance Corporal (S/11551) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Mitchellslacks, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. He was posted to 8/10th Battalion in France in July 1916 and transferred to 1st Battalion. He was a member of the Lewis Gun Section when he was shot by a sniper near Monchy-le-Preux. (Source:Service Record and D&G Standard 14/7/1917 p.2)

Adam Bell – age 21 – Corporal (S/43156) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Adam enlisted as Private (S/15627) in the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but was transferred to the Gordons in France.
Born 1895 in Closeburn. Son of James and Janet (Johnstone) Bell of Park, Closeburn.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1917 and buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall) Belgium.

Born 1891 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire as Henry Johnstone Bell. Son of James and Janet (Johnstone) Bell of Park, Closeburn.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


JAMES M. DOBIE, R. NAVY.
Thought to be:
James Mathieson Dobie – age 24 – Stoker 1st Class (K/17640) H.M.S. "Black Prince", Royal Navy.
James lost both of his parents while he was a child and he lived with his uncle and aunt Robert and Agnes Peacock in Market Street, Maxwelltown (1901) and in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne (1911)
James worked for the North Eastern Railway in Newcastle for several years, as trace horse lad and then as a checker. He enlisted in the navy in January 1913 and joined the cruiser “Black Prince” in April 1914. She was sunk with all hands during the Battle of Jutland.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of the late James Mathieson Dobie (d.1894) and of the late Lydia (McMurray) Dobie (d.1897) of Dumfries. Nephew of Mrs William Kennedy of Mechanics Court, Dumfries.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

JOHN DOUGLAS, CAN. INF.
John Wright Douglas – age 30 – Private (552385) 78th Battalion. Canadian Infantry.
John was working as a teamster at Lethbridge in Alberta when he enlisted there in February 1915. He had previously served for three years with the Ayrshire Yeomanry. He married in February 1916 and sailed from Canada in June 1916 with the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was transferred to the Fort Garry Horse but was then posted to the 78th in France in November 1916.
Born 1886 in Closeburn. Son of Hugh and Jane or Jeanie (Wright) Douglas, of Upper Rigg, Closeburn. Husband of Elizabeth (Allardyce) Douglas, of 1063 Braemar Street and of 959/5th Street, Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Killed in Action on 23 February 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


JOHN A. DUFF, R. NAVY.
John Alexander Duff – age 27 – Wireless Operator, S.S. "Clan Farquhar" (Glasgow) Mercantile Marine.
In 1901, aged 11, John was living with his uncle and aunt, William and Janet Duff at Buchan Hall, Closeburn. He served his apprenticeship as a painter in Thornhill before he took up wireless telegraphy. The “Clan Farquhar” was sailing from Calcutta to London when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB 43 in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya.
Born 1889 at Kidsgrove, Wolsanton, Staffordshire. Son of the late James and Agnes (Tortington) Duff. Nephew of William Duff of Newton Cottage, Thornhill.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 26 February 1917 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.


ROBERT DUFF, R. ENNIS. FUS.
Robert Duff – age 27 – Private (30864) 5th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Robert was a Territorial and was mobilised as Private (2200) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. He was posted as Private (28238) to the 11th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in Salonika in northern Greece in September 1916 but was transferred to the R.I.F.
Born 1890 in Closeburn. Son of Robert and Annie (Carson) Duff of The Park, Closeburn.
Killed in Action on 15 July 1917 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.

WILLIAM FARROW, R.F.L.F.
William Farrow – age 29 – Lance Sergeant (14873) 25th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (Legion of Frontiersmen)
In 1911 William was a constable with the Metropolitan Police Force at the Police Station at 49-51 Union Grove, Clapham, London S.W. He enlisted in early 1915 and landed with his battalion at Mombasa in East Africa in May 1915.
Born 1888 in Closeburn. Son of the late John Farrow and of Agnes (Docherty) Farrow of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 25 October 1917 and buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
Also named on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.


WILLIAM FRASER, K.O.S.B.
William Fraser – age 19 – Private (40151) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed at Tinwald Downs when he enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB in October 1914. He was posted to his battalion in France in August 1916 and had been at the front for two weeks when he was killed.
Born 1897 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Margaret (Richardson) Fraser and of John and Agnes Fraser of Auchencairn Cottage, Closeburn.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


JAMES HANNAH, GORDON HIGHRS.

HERBERT HAZELL, R.A.S.C.
Heber Hazell – age 20 – Private (31731) Cameron Highlanders transferred as Private (544239) to 516th Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps.
Heber died on Christmas eve at Shawsholm, Closeburn of influenza and pneumonia.
Born 1899 in Aston Tirrold, Wallingford, Berkshire as Heber. Son of John Handy Hazell and of Leah (Broughton) Hazell of Chapel Row, Bucklebury, Reading, Berkshire.
Died on Service on 24 December 1918 and buried in Closeburn Parish Churchyard Extension. (CWG)


ROBERT HYSLOP, 12TH ROYAL SCOTS.
Robert Hyslop – age 22 – Private (40340) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert enlisted as Private (23361) and joined the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in the summer of 1916 before being transferred to the Royal Scots. He was attached to the 90th Field Company of the Royal Engineers when their billet was hit by a shell and several men were killed.
Born 1895 in Closeburn. Son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Robertson) Hyslop of Morton Holm Cottage, Closeburn.
Killed in Action on 28 March 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Keir Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire.


WILLIAM D. HYSLOP, 5CAM. HIGHRS.
William Douglas Hyslop – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was assisting in the management of his father's farm of Morton Holm when he enlisted as Private (4218) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. He landed with his battalion as dismounted troops at Gallipoli in August 1915 but was wounded and was evacuated to hospital in Scotland. After recovering from his wounds and from enteric fever, he was posted as Private (5205) to the 1/6th Black Watch in France and later as Private (S/40637) to the 1st Black Watch. He was commissioned in May 1917 and posted for officer training to the Litchfield O.T.C. He returned to France in October 1917 and had been selected to join the Royal Flying Corps. At Rouen, on his way home in March 1918, on hearing of the German offensive he at once volunteered for duty and returned to the firing line.
Born 1894 in Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Agnes Good (Corsan) Hyslop and of William Drummond Hyslop of Morton Holm, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 25 March 1918 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1. Somme, France.
Also named on the Keir Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire.

WILLIAM KELLOCK, R.S. FUS.
William Kellock – age 22 – Private (15345) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was employed at Longmyre when he enlisted in November 1914 and he landed with the 6th Batalion RSF at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Kidderminster in July 1916, and wounded for second time in May 1917. He was fatally wounded in December and died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
Born 1895 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow. Son of John and Mary Jane (Thomson) Kellock of High Cample, Closeburn and of 12 Townhead Street, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 15 December 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.


EDWARD MARTIN, CAN. INF.
Edward Martin – age 32 – Private (1263700) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Edward was farming at Noremac, east of Eston, Saskatchewan when he was drafted at Regina in March 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April and joined his battalion in France in August but was killed near Cambrai a month later.
Born 1886 in Closeburn. Son of Thomas and Christina (Murray) Martin of Drumlanrig Mains, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire,
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in St. Olle British Cemetery, Raillencourt, France.
Also named on the War Memorials in Durisdeer, Dumriesshire.
