Wallace Memorials, Ayr
Location: High Street, & Newmarket Street, Ayr
OS Ref: NS 338 218

There are two memorials in this thread. Although they should get one each
these memorials are close together and the second memorial has no
information about it so I thought I'd post them together.

The first is the magnificent tower in the heart of old Ayr, half way along
the High Street. The Wallace Tower is another of the 19th century memorials
erected to William Wallace. This one has him in very fancy armour and helmet
and a rather camp pose. Pure Victorian fantasy.

The second is just around the corner from the tower. High up on a wall above a shop in Newmarket Street. (actually more of a lane than a street) there is nothing to indicate why the memorial is there. Even though it doesn't say it. I am assuming it's a Wallace memorial because the style of the armour and helmet are similar to the statue on front of the Wallace tower.

Theres another Wallace monument in Ayr, The Barnweil monument. I can't give you a street name as it's in the countryside but if you put the following co-ordinates into google maps it will show the location N 55° 31.989 W 004° 31.571

It's now closed to the public for safety reasons Sad

Welcome to the forum - we are short of anyone local to cover Ayr so it will be great to see what else you can add - I pretty much limit myself to short diversions when I am going to and from Prestwick

Some more pics of and around the Wallace Statues and his neck looks even worse at this angle.
