Marleen

I have an interest in all female casualties, all campaigns.

I do not have a record of Jean Wallace WRAF, WW I and there is no record of her in the CWGC Debt of Honour Register.

From where did you obtain her name and do you have any further details?

Tony

PS. I should have welcvomed you tomthe forum, I do so now

Moving this to the queries and requests section. The Research Lookups section is for lookups of specific documents, texts and resources.

Hello again Marleen.

I do in fact have a photograph of that memorial with her name on.

What threw me was you quoted her service as "W.R.A.F" ( Women's Royal Air Force) so I concentrated on World War One as this was a WW I service but she appears on the WW2 (1939-1945) memorial and her service should be W.A.A.F. ( Women's Auxiliary Air Force) so somebody - relative, stonemason or whoever obviously made a mistake.

However, I do have a profile for her but unfortunately only her name and photographs of the war memorial and church (taken by Jamie McGinlay of SWMP).

You say that she may be a relative. Do you have any other information on her that may assist in further research. I would be happy to pursue such research, on your behalf and obviously to complete her profile.

Do you live in the area or near the church? There may just possibly be some reference in the church records regarding the names on the memorial also a date of death, if it could be discovered, would make research easier.

I won't burden you with any more suggestions at the moment but do let me know if you find any more details.

Best wishes

Tony

No problem. It was actually more for folk like me who went to the Torphichen thread to see the plaque after reading this one.

Cheers

Adam

Hope you are still watching - Would you have information as to when the 1939-1945 plaque was installed?

It is just a shot in the dark but I now discover that the WAAF were redesignated WRAF on 1st February 1949, ultimately merged with the RAF in 1994.

Whilst Jean Wallace's name does not appear on the post war Armed Forces Memorial, established 1st Jan 1948, that doesn't mean that she was not a member of the WRAF. So if that memorial was installed after 1948?????

If Marleen can come up with a date of death it could solve that query.

Regards

Tony

If she died in West Lothian there are four possibles between 1939 and 1958. Three were aged 71 to 90, the other was Jeanie Oliver Wallace who died in hospital on 13th January 1948 age 28, her illness was of 20 months duration.
She was recorded as a papermill worker who resided at Hill Terrace, Torphichen.
If this is her, she falls outwith the CWGC cut off date.

Thanks Jim

I am still keeping an open mind on the possibility of a veteran WW I WRAF being wrongly recorded on the memorial. Stranger things have happened.

Marleen

Jeanie Oliver Wallace died in Scotland on 13th January 1948 having been affected by the cause of her death for 20 months. Send me an e-mail from the website below and I can provide more detail.

We have now established that Jeanie Oliver Wallace was the lady Marleen was seeking.

Jim

Did you establish if she was W.R.A.F. or was the memorial wrong and she was a W.A.A.F. if she was the latter was her cause of death as a result of war service?

If as you say the cause of her death lasted 20 months that suggests the initial cause was April/May 1946, was it war/service related?

Regards

Tony
