Hawick Rugby Club Roll of Honour

Now located in Wilton Lodge Museum, Hawick.

UKNIWM Ref: 44285

The Roll was gifted to the club in October 1919 by Mr T.D Elliot, a member of the general committee. It had been made by Mr Alex Inglis, 10 High Street, Hawick.

Of the one hundred and fifty seven members of Hawick Rugby Football Club who fought in the Great War, thirty six were killed or died of their wounds.

The Roll of Honour consists of a hand written list of the members of Hawick Rugby Club who served during the Great War.
I was fortunate enough to have a small part in its rescue from obscurity about 8 years ago.
For some reason it had been removed from the Hawick Clubrooms and put into storage under the main stand many many years ago.
It was only in conversation with one of the oldest club supporters that he remembered a Roll of Honour hanging in the clubrooms and we instigated a search.
The Roll of Honour was subsequently found, cleaned up and donated to the local museum. But how it came to be "lost" in the first place to possibly one of the proudest rugby clubs in the country remains a mystery to me.

Walter Sutherland, "Wattie Suddie", Hawick & Scotland rugby legend killed by a stray shell at Hulloch on his 28th birthday.

‘It is hard to realise that one who so recently had walked the streets of the old Border town, who was held in such affection by its youth, whose bright smile and cheery nature were like rays of sunshine, had gone and would never again adorn its peaceful life. The memory of such a life, with so many just claims to remembrance, will always stand out as a permanent inspiration and a bright example to all who may follow the Rugby game’.

‘He was made of the stamp of which heroes are made’.
