Brydekirk was a quoad sacra parish, partly in Annan, Cummertrees and Hoddam parishes.

1914 - 1918

L.CPL. JOHN AITCHISON, 1/5th KOSB.
John Aitchison – age 19 – Corporal (1053) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was shot and wounded in the front line trench but died in the dressing station a few hours later.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of John and Sarah (Baird) Aitchison of Landheads, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 14 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan Burgh War Memorial.


PTE. DAVID ALCOCK, 2ND RSF.
David Alcock – age 21 – Private (24021) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
David was a farm servant when he enlisted as Private (23108) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916. He was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June 1916 but died of wounds in the 3rd Stationary Hospital in Rouen four months later.
Born 1895 in Mealsgate, Wigton, Cumberland. Son of John and Margaret Jane (Key) Alcock of Church Street, Brydekirk, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 20 October 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.


PTE. ROBT. ANDERSON, 1st KOSB.
Robert Anderson – age 26 – Private (18653) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915. He later served with the 6th KOSB in France before re-joining the 1st Battalion.
Born 1890 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of Christopher and Margaret (Dirom) Anderson of Brydekirk, Annan. Husband of Agnes (Notman) Anderson who he married in 1913 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 21 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dornock Parish War Memorial and on the Annan Burgh War Memorial.

George Haining Armstrong – age 18 – Private (53083) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was just 17 and a gardener when he enlisted in February 1917. He was mobilised as Private (17969) to the 56th Training Battalion in April 1917. He landed in France on 30 March and joined the 1/8th Royal Scots on 3 April 1918. Nine days later he was killed.
Born 1899 in Brydekirk. Son of Robert and Mary Ann Armstrong of Manse Crescent, Brydekirk, Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

James Armstrong – age 20 – Corporal (40187) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice engineer at the Cochran & Co. Newbie Engineering Works when he enlisted in October 1914. He was posted to the KOSB in France in August 1916, He was badly wounded in April 1917 and had rejoined his battalion in mid June.
Born 1896 in Brydekirk. Son of Robert and Mary Ann Armstrong of Manse Crescent, Brydekirk, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 31 July 1917 and buried in Potijze Chateau Lawn Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Burgh War Memorial and on the Cochrane & Company Roll of Honour.


PTE. WM. ARMSTRONG, BLACK WATCH.
Not listed by CWGC.
William, aged 22, was an insurance agent when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (12553) in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the Black Watch in January 1916 but during his training he was diagnosed with tuberculosis at the Military Hospital at Cromarty and he was discharged from the army on 29 March 1916. He died at home four months later.
Born 1892 in Brydekirk. Son of William and Annie Shaw (O'Hara) Armstrong of High Street, Brydekirk.
Died on 25 July 1916. Burial place not known.

As William's illness was a pre-existing condition and not due to military service, he does not qualify for inclusion on the CWGC Register.

Alexander Pearson Bell – age 26 – Lance Corporal (29297) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, attached to the 87th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Alexander was managing his mother's farm of Browmoor when he enlisted in November 1914. He went to France early 1917 but died of wounds in a Casualty Clearing Station at Dozinghem.
Born 1890 in Brydekirk. Son of Robert and Jessie (Alston) Bell of Woodside of Browmoor, Kirtlebridge Road, Brydekirk, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 12 September 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. PAT. A. P. D. BELL, 5/6th SCOT. RIFLES.
Patrick Alexander Pasley Dirom Bell – age 19 – Private (36801) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Pat had been employed on agricultural work and at Corsehill Quarry and enlisted when he was 18. Pat was buried in the Middle Farm Cemetery, Wytschaete, north of Messines but was re-interred in February 1920.
Born 1898 in Brydekirk. Son of Andrew and Margaret Jane (Halliday) Bell of Mount Annan Lodge, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 3 November 1917 and buried in Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Hoddom Parish War Memorial in Ecclefechan.


CAPT. W. O. BELL-IRVING, MC, 11th HUSSARS.
William Ogle Bell-Irving, Military Cross – age 28 – Captain, 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars.
William was educated at St. Ninian's School in Moffat and at Charterhouse School, (1903-06) Like his father, he became partner in the Jardine Matheson company. He joined the Lanarkshire Yeomanry as 2nd Lieutenant in 1909 and joined the regular army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Hussars in February 1912. He landed with the Hussars in France on 5 August 1914 and served at Mons, the Marne, the Aisne and at Ypres. He was appointed A.D.C. to General Charles James Briggs in France and Salonica from September 1914 until December 1916. During this time he was awarded a M.C. He was appointed Brigade-Major of Cavalry in December 1916 and moved with his brigade to Egypt in July 1917.
Born 1889 in Brydekirk. Son of John and Isabella (Thornton) Bell-irving of Hong Kong, of Mount Annan, Brydekirk and of Milkbank, Kettleholm, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 29 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the St. Mungo's Parish Church memorial in Kettleholm Village and on the Charterhouse School Roll of Honour.

Edward Cowan Carlyle – age 29 – Private (204361) 1/5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Edward had served his apprenticeship as a gardener at Luce House, Brydekirk but was working as a signalman when he enlisted as Private (200) in the Highland Light Infantry in Coatbridge in September 1914. He was discharged as medically unfit in November 1914. He enlisted again a year later as Private (5094) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was posted to the 1/5th Seaforths.
Born 1888 in Waterbeck, Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Christopher and Annie (Cowan) Carlyle of Brydekirk, Annan. Husband of Elizabeth Stewart (Morris) Carlyle of 10 Lumsden Street, Overnewton, Glasgow who he married in 1915 in Holytown, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 6 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour


PTE. WILLIAM CARLYLE, 6th KOSB.
William Carlyle – age 19 – Private (12272) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was engaged on farm work when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but four month later was killed at the Battle of Loos.

Born 1897 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of Mary (Carruthers) Scaife and step-son of Andrew Bell Carruthers Scaife of Outertown Cottages, Annan.

Thomas Beck Dalrymple – age 24 – Private (2278 & 240702) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine and was killed at Gaza.
Born 1893 in Annan. Son of John and Annie Dalrymple of 2 Haining's Court, Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.

George William Graham – age 20 – Private (23487) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. George was a farm labourer.
Born 1898 in Cockermouth, Cumberland. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann (Taylor) Graham of 350 Mossbay Road, Workington, Cumberland. Husband of Katherine Margaret (Elliott) Graham of Landheads, Brydekirk who he married in 1915 in Brydekirk.
Missing in Action on 6 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

James Currie Halliday – age 24 – Private (12288) 6th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but four month later was killed at the Battle of Loos.

James Hastie – age 24 – Private (3033 & 280922) 1/7th (Blythswood) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James was working as a gardener at Cathcart, near Glasgow when he enlisted in late 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine before moving to France in April 1918. He was assisting in a dressing station near Henin when he was hit by a shell.
Born 1893 in Annan. Son of the late George Hastie and of Jane Hastie of Lady Street, Brydekirk, Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.


PTE. ALBERT B. HOLLIDAY, 1st GORDONS.
Albert Holliday – age 36 – Private (S/7048) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Albert was a gardener and was greenkeeper at the Charleston Bowling Club in Paisley when he enlisted in the Army Special Reserve in September 1914. He had served previously in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and was posted to the 1st Gordons in France on 7 October 1914, but was killed less than three weeks later.
Born 1879 in Brydekirk. Son of Mary Holliday. Husband of Janet (Haig) Holliday of 3 New Stock Street and of 69 Stock Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire who he married in 1900 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 24 October 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


MAJOR SIR WM. JARDINE, BART. 3rd KOSB.
Sir William Jardine – age 50 – Major, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh and succeeded to the title of 9th Baronet Jardine, of Applegirth in 1893. He was commissioned in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Cheshire Regiment and transferred to the 3rd KOSB in May 1895. He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902. He was promoted to Major in September 1914. He died of heart failure, after a short illness, in the Belgrave Mansions Hotel in London.
Born 1865 in Edinburgh. (Birth Registered at Applegarth and Edinburgh)
Son of Alexander and Henrietta (Younger) Jardine. Husband of Lady Jardine (Eda Georgina May Younger) of Jardine Hall, Applegarth, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1906 in St. Giles, Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 13 December 1915 and buried in Applegarth Parish Churchyard Extension, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)

William Coupland McDonald – age 24 – Private (335681) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a ploughman when he enlisted in 1916. He served as Private (8369) in the 8th Royal Scots before he transferred to the 13th Battalion. Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Peter and Margaret Jane (Coupland) McDonald of Dalebank Farm, Brydekirk, Annan.
Killed in Action on 25 May 1918 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.


PTE. DAVID B. RICHARDSON, 12th ROYAL SCOTS.
David Beattie Richardson – age 32 – Private (271189) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was a bricklayer when he enlisted as Private (31342) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in July 1917. When he arrived in France in November he was posted to the 5th/6th and then the 16th Royal Scots. In February 1918 he was taken ill with myalgia and treated at various hospitals in France before he was posted to the 12th Battalion in May 1918.
Born 1886 in Brydekirk as David Halliday. Son of of the late James Halliday and of Helen (Beattie) Richardson, formerly Halliday, and step-son of Walter Richardson of High Street, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 13 July 1918 and buried in Le Peuplier Military Cemetery, Caestre, France.

PTE. JOHN SHANNON, 1/5th KOSB.
John Shannon – age 27 – Private (824) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was an apprentice gardener at Hoddom Bridge End, near Ecclefechan (but in Cummertrees Parish) when he enlisted in the Territorial 5th KOSB in April 1911, aged 21. He was a gardener at Stobo Castle, near Peebles, when he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was discharged from the army in April 1916 as his time had expired. He chose not to re-enlist and he died of pulmonary congestion and enteric fever at the family home.
Born 1890 in Cummertrees. Son of Samuel and Janet (Smith) of Hoddom Bridge End, Cummertrees.
Died on 9 August 1917 and buried in Hoddom Old Parish Churchyard, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Cummertrees Parish War Memoria, on the Stobo Church memorial and on the Stobo section of the Peebles War Memorial.l.

Jacob Strong Spencer – age 22 – Lance Corporal (270350) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Jacob had served his apprenticeship in Cockermouth, Cumberland and was a gardener, like his father, when he enlisted as Private (7529) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He joined the Royal Scots in France in February 1918 but three months later he was killed.
Born 1896 in Bolton, Wigton, Cumberland. Son of George and Sarah (Strong) Spencer of Mount Annan, Brydekirk and of Hill Cottage, Cleughead, Annan.
Killed in Action on 26 May 1918 and buried in Martinsart British Cemetery, Somme, France.

SERGT. GEO. THOMSON, DCM, 2nd KOSB.
George Thomson, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 25 – Sergeant (12215) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a farm servant at Outertown Farm, Annan when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with the 6th KOSB at Bolougne in May 1915. He was wounded twice and served with the 7th/8th Battalion before moving to the 2nd KOSB. He was awarded the DCM as Corporal G. Thomson, 12215, K.O.S.B. (Brydekirk by Annan). “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in working round the flank and capturing an enemy strong point which was holding up the company. In it were about fifty of the enemy. He afterwards beat off with loss all counter-attacks on his trench.”
Born 1893 in Brydekirk as George Campbell. Son of Mary Ann (Campbell) Thomson and step-son of George Thomson of School Street, Brydekirk, Annan who married in 1896 in Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 18 April 1918 and buried in St. Venant-Robecq Road British Cemetery, Robecq, France.

William Thomson – age 19 – Private (2628) 1/6th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was a farm servant at Spittalriddinghill Farm, Annan when he enlisted in November 1914, aged 17. Because of his age, it was the summer of 1916 before he went to France.
Born 1897 in Brydekirk. Son of George and Mary Ann (Campbell) Thomson, of School Street, Brydekirk, Annan.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Hunter's Cemetery, Beaumont- Hamel , Somme, France.

Hunter's Cemetery (the origin of the name may refer to a Chaplain attached to the Black Watch, the Rev. Hunter) is, in fact, a great shell-hole, in which soldiers of the 51st Division, who fell in the capture of Beaumont-Hamel on 13 November 1916, were buried after the battle.
