6989 Private J. M. MacLean, lst/5th Battalion, Scottish Rifles, T.F. For conspicuous gallantry. When changing a box of bombs from one place to another, he noticed that one of the fuses was smoking. He lifted it out of the box, but it exploded before he had time to throw it over the parapet, and he was severely wounded. His prompt action saved many men who were near him in the trenches.
