SCOTTISH RIFLES SECTION

Named on the Langholm War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

S.M. JOS. TURNBULL, SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Joseph Turnbull – age 33 – Company Serjeant Major (535) 1/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Joseph enlisted as Private 6960 in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1900. He served in South Africa from February to November 1900 and was discharged under the terms of the demobilistion of the South African Field Force. In 1901 he was a railway porter at Stevenston in Ayrshire and by 1907 he was a steelworker in Motherwell, Lanarkshire. He enlisted there and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in March 1915 but was killed three months later at Festubert.
Born 1882 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William Armstrong Turnbull and Janet (Hounam) Turnbull of 1 Mary Street, Langholm. Husband of the late Grace Gray (Nisbet) Turnbull of Parkhead Street, Motherwell who he married in 1904 in Uddingston, Lanarkshire. Grace died in 1909 in Motherwell.
Father of Jessie Baxter Thomson Turnbull born at Macdonald Street Motherwell in 1907.
Missing in Action on 15 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial and on the Colville's Dalzell Steelworks memorial.

Named on the Moffat War Memorial in Dumfriesshire (together with two of his brothers) as:

CUTHBERTSON, SERGT. A. SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Alexander Cuthbertson – age 40 – Sergeant (533) 1/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Alexander was a painter when he enlisted as Private (6982) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1900 and he served in South Africa from February but was discharged in November 1900 under the terms of the demobilisation of the South African Field Force and he returned to Moffat. By 1911 he had become the caretaker of the Drill Hall in Whamond Street in Motherwell which was the base for “G” & “H” companies of the 6th Cameronians. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in March 1915.
Born 1875 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Margaret (Dinwoodie) Cuthbertson and of James Cuthbertson of Moodkee, Moffat.
Husband of Williamina (Barrett) Cuthbertson who he married in 1902 in Moffat.
Father of James Cuthbertson (and other children) of 73B, Miller St., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. (Source: CWGC)
Killed in Action on 12 October 1915 and buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

His brothers:
James Cuthbertson – age 34 – Private (3762) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Killed 25/9/1915 at Loos.
Samuel Cuthbertson – age 27 – Sergeant (16400) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Killed 9/4/1918 in Belgium.

KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS SECTION
PTE. F. GRINDALL
.

Named on the KOSB section of the Moffat War Memorial in Dumfriesshire and on the Dalzell Steelworks Memorial.

Frank Grindall – age 27 – Private (7776) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank had spent 9 years in the KOSB as Private (2686) and had served in the South African War. He had worked in the Dalzell Steel Works in Motherwell and he was a parcel delivery van driver in Moffat for the Caledonian Railway Company when he re-enlisted. Frank joined his battalion in France on 17 February 1915 but was killed two months later.
Born 1888 in Moffat. Son of the late Emily (Rae) Grindall and of Robert Grindall of Moffat. Husband of Christina McLean (Green) Grindall, later Mrs Walter Henry Starling, of Gartland Cottage, Moffat and of 76 Range Road, Flemington, who he married in 1912 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Also named on the Moffat War Memorial is his brother:
William Grindall – age 32 – Private (34319) 5th Battalion, Border Regiment.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918.

LONDON SCOTTISH SECTION

.

Named on the Moffat War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

STEWART, PTE. J. LONDON SCOTTISH.
James Stewart – age 29 – Private (515955) 2/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
James had served his apprenticeship as a plumber in Moffat but was working at the Brandon Bridge Building Company in Motherwell when he enlisted as Driver (T/4372) in the Army Service Corps in 1914. He went to Egypt in June 1915 and moved to Salonika in northern Greece in October 1915. His service number was changed to T4/247112 before he returned to Egypt in September 1917. He was transferred to the London Scottish in May 1918 and moved with them to France in July 1918.
(thanks to an unusually detailed Medal Roll)
Born 1889 in Moffat. Son of the late James and Janet Stewart of Moffat. Brother of Mrs. Janet Wilson of 206 Merry Street Motherwell and of Glenolden, 104 Wells Avenue, Philadelphia, USA.
Killed in Action on 14 October 1918 and buried in Derry House Cemetery No.2, Belgium.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.

Named on the Teviothead Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

JOHN F. DINWIDDIE SAPPER R.E.
John Frederick Dinwiddie – age 20 – Sapper (3074) 1/1st Lowland Field Company, Royal Engineers.
John was an engineer with George Russell & Co. Engineers and Crane Manufacturers in Motherwell when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his company in France in March 1915 but was killed six weeks later while clearing barbed-wire.
Born 1895 Teviothead, Roxburghshire. Son of the Rev. Archibald Hutton Dinwiddie and Sophie Antoinette (Thorold) Dinwiddie of the Manse, Teviothead.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

His brother is also named on the Teviothead War Memorial as:
ARCHIBD. H. DINWIDDIE L.CPL. 5th CAMERONS.
Archibald Hutton Dinwiddie – age 19 – Private (S/26153) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Archie was employed in a law office in Hawick when he enlisted before he was 18. He had been in France for two months when he was killed during a raid on the German trenches on 14 October 1917.

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

C.S.M. WILLIAM CLAPPERTON. Scottish Rifles
William Clapperton – age 44 – Company Sergeant Major (11426) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William was a groom, aged 19, when he enlisted as Private (2658) in the Cameron Highlanders in October 1891 and he served in Malta, Sudan, Egypt and South Africa before he transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1902. His service was completed in October 1903.
He came to Motherwell in 1906 and was working in the Dazell Steel Works when war broke out. He enlisted and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1872 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Sibbald Clapperton (died 1878) and of John Clapperton and step-son of Jessie (Brown) Calpperton of High Street, Galashiels. Husband of Mary Jane (Bathgate) Clapperton of 22 Parkhead Street, Motherwell who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 6 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the South Dalziel Parish Church War Memorial and on the Davis Colville & Sons Dalzell Works memorial in Motherwell

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. A. M. HILSON, K.O.S.B.
Andrew Mentier Hilson – age 26 – Private (865806) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 1st KOSB landed at Queen beach at Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944. Andrew was killed four days later near Cambes and was re-interred at Douvres in May 1945.
Born 1917 in Larkhall, Lanarkshire, indexed as Andrew Muter Hilson. Son of William and Elizabeth (Melville) Hilson of 406 Watson Street, Motherwell.
Husband of Elizabeth (King formerly Monaghan) Hilson of 33 Waverley Place, Galashiels who he married in April 1944 in Galashiels as Andrew Meuter Hilson.
Killed in Action on 10 June 1944 and buried in Commonwealth War Grave – La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, Calvados, France.

Named on the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

H. ROSS
Hugh Ross – age 27 – Private (271271) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Hugh was in business a grocer in Motherwell, Lanarkshire when he enlisted as Private (760) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in September 1914. He joined the Royal Scots in late 1917.
Born 1891 in Currie, Midlothian. Son of Hugh and Janet (Clark) Ross of Millburn Street, Motherwell and of Glasgow Road, Burnbank, Hamilton. Husband of Helen Fairbairn (Fairley) Ross of The Mount, Cockburnspath who he married in September 1917 in Cockburnspath when he was serving with the 2/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Zantvoorde British Cemetery, Belgium.
