The Book "History of the 42nd Royal Highlanders - The Black Watch by Lt Col Percy Groves , RSA has on Appendix V and page 27 a reference to a War Memorial Cairn on HILL OF TOR ALVIE , near Alvie , Inverness shire ( Grid ref 864 087 GB Grid)

The book page 27 states : On the Summit of Hill of Tor Alvie on the Duke of Richmond's estate of Kinrara, a large Cairn has been erected to the Memory of Sir Robert Macara and other "Scotch " Officers and men who fell in the PENINSULA and WATERLOO Campaigns .

( Sir Robert Macara was the Lt Colonel of the Regiment when he was killed . He was the son of the Rev Macara of FORTINGAL , Glenlyon , Perthshire )

THE COURIER & ADVERTISER , FRIDAY , JUNE 19th , 2009:

CRAIGIE SECTION :

MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS OF A BYGONE ERA :

Patrick W . Anderson , of Letham , Angus , has been in touch to point out a couple of recent anniversaries - The Battle of QUATRE BRAS ( June 16th , 1815 ) and WATERLOO , ( June 18th , 1815 ).

"There is a memorial beside the Kilmallie old churchyard , near Corpach , Inverness -shire to Lt Col John Cameron of Fassifern of the 92nd (later Gordon Highlanders ) who fell at Quatre Bras , " he says , "He was a grandson of John Cameron of Fassifern who in 1745 had tried to persuade his brother , "The Gentle Lochiel , not to support Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rising of 1744.

"Also in action in these battles , on June 16th 1815 , was Lt Col Sir Robert Macara , KCB of the 42nd ( Black Watch ) who was killed in action by the French Lancers at Quatre Bras as he was being carried , dangerously wounded , from the field . His relatives received a Waterloo Medal in commemoration of his services. Macara was the son of The Rev Macara , of Fortingal , Glenlyon .

" On the summit of the HILL OF TOR ALVIE on the Duke of Richmond's estate of Kinrara , a large cairn has been erected to the Memory of Lt Col Sir Robert Macara and other Scottish Officers and Men who fell in the PENSINSULA and WATERLOO CAMPAIGN . This information is in the book , "The History of the 42nd Royal Highlanders - The Black Watch , now the 1st Bn The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders ) 1729 - 1893 . It is illustrated by Harry Payne .

"It is amazing no one nowadays mentions this Black Watch Memorial on the top of Hill Of Tor Alvie which is beside Loch Alvie and Alvie , Inverness -shire ," Mr Anderson concludes , "Maybe some of the Craigie readers know of this Memorial's existence and may even have even visited it ?!

PRESS & JOURNAL , Tuesday , June 16th , 2009 :

Letters :

MEMORIALS TO SLAIN SOLDIERS :

Sir , Around this time are the anniversaries of the Quatre Bras ( June 16th , 1815) and Waterloo ( June 18th, 1815 ) battles in what is now Belgium.

There is a memorial pillar beside Kilmallie Old churchyard, near Corpach, Inverness-shire to Lt Col John Cameron of Fassisfern of the 92nd ( later the Gordon Highlanders ) who was slain at Quatre Bras . He was the grandson of John Cameron of Fassifern , who had tried to persuade his brother , "The Gentle Lochiel " not to support Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Also in action at Quatre Bras was Lt Col Sir Robert Macara of the 42nd ( Black Watch ) who was killed in action by the French lancers as he was being carried wounded from the field . His relatives received a Waterloo Medal in commemoration of his services .

On the summit of Hill of Tor Alvie , on the Duke of Richmond's estate of Kinrara , a large cairn is said to be located , erected to the Memory of Lt Col Sir Robert Macara and the other Scottish Officers and Men who fell in the PENINSULA and WATERLOO CAMPAIGN .

Perhaps your readers or former Gordon Highlanders or former Black Watch soldiers will have heard of these two memorials. I have never heard of any Regiments visiting these Memorials for any Service , or have they just been forgotten over the years since 1815 ?

My transcription of the abovementioned "Craigie Section " artilce in the The Courier & Advertiser - Friday 19th June 2009 showed an error and the newspaper article shows " not to support Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rising of 1745 ........

I typed " 1744 " an error of the typing fingers and not the computer ! The newspaper had recorded it correctly so readers of the newspaper would have read it

today received a letter from a Dr Grant from Aviemore area informing me that he read my letter in the Press & Journal and he informs me via a copy of a map of Torr Alvie the Waterloo Cairn is still there . Acess he says is from the AVIEMORE - KINCRAIG road ( B 9162)

He said his Gr gr grandfather was Duncan Grant of the Cameron Highlanders at Waterloo .

The map also shows another interesting Monument near to the Waterloo Cairn and this is the DUKE OF GORDON'S MONUMENT with a Duchess of Gordon's Monument on the other side of Torr Alvie .

The above website shows an error on the initial wording and should read

"To the Memory of Sir Robert Macara of the 42nd Regiment or Royal Highlanders - Colonel John Cameron of the 92nd Regiment or Gordon Highlanders and Their Brave Countrymen who gloriously fell at the battle of Waterloo in June 1815

Erected by the Most Noble the Marquis of Huntly, August 16th , 1815

The Red Hackle Magazine no 112 for November 2011 has a letter to the editor in its pages: Correspondence page 14:

Dear Editor ,

WATERLOO CAIRN - HILL OF TOR ALVIE - INVERNESS SHIRE.

On reading the article in the May 2011 edition of the Red Hackle Magazine concerning the church window in York I thought that readers would be interested to learn of another memorial which may not be well known.

On the summit of the Hill of Tor Alvie , close to Loch Alvie in Inverness shire stands a memorial called the WATERLOO CAIRN . Erected by the "MOST NOBLE MARQUIS OF HUNTLY " on 16 August 1815 , it commemorates the lives of SIR ROBERT MACARA of the 42nd Regiment or Royal Highlanders and COLONEL JOHN CAMERON of the 92nd Regiment or Gordon Highlanders and "their Brave Countrymen who gloriously fell at the Battle of Waterloo."

Macara was actually killed on 16th June 1815 at the Battle of QUATRE BRAS whilst Commanding the 42nd and he was the son of the Reverand Mr Macara of Fortingall , Glenlyon in Perthshire.

Editor's note ( by Lt Col Roddy Riddell ) Pat Anderson's uncle (also a Patrick ) served with the 8th and 10th Battalions of the Black Watch and the RFC . He died of wounds sustained during the war on 2 November 1921.
