Carrbridge War Memorial
Location: Off Station Road
OS Ref:NH 905 227

You have to go hunting for this memorial. I eventually found it tucked away off a dead-end road, on top of a hill, without a proper path, surrounded by trees. There were a couple of signposts but they only pointed in its general direction. There is a certain charm about its location, and it is looked after, but it is not really serving its intended purpose.

I’m assuming that in the 1920s there were no trees around it and the position meant it had a commanding view over the village, the station and the old A9 road. A daily reminder to everyone in the village, and those passing through, of the sacrifice of Carrbridge & District. Today you can’t see it until you are about 20 yards away. It is also in a position where very few people could join in any commemoration service.

In the past few years many memorials have been moved to more accessible spots. I hope Carrbridge’s cross can be moved soon. Alternatively they could cut back the wood around it and give it back its position of prominence.

Great to see the memorial cleaned up. The picture below was taken 1995, before the clean up.
