BARBOUR, ROBERT. SCOTS GUARDS - STEILSON FARM.
Robert Barbour – age 31 – Private (14204) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1886 in Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Shankland) Barbour and of William Barbour and Susan (McMinn) Barbour of Steilston Farm, Holywood.
Killed in Action on 31 July 1917 and buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium.

BURGESS, DAVID. R.F. ARTILLERY – SUNNYHILL.
David James Burgess – age 26 – Driver (96894) 91st Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
David was a ploughman at Heathfield, Holywood when he enlisted in the RFA in July 1915. He was a Private in the 37th Reserve Battery of the RFA at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow when he married in February 1916. David died of influenza and pneumonia while serving in India.
Born 1892 at Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Sarah (Douglas) Burgess of Heathfield, Holywood. Husband of Margaret (McGinnily) Burgess of Barbeth, New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1916 at Braco Cottage, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Service on 1 November 1918 and named on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) but buried in Nowshera Military Cemetery.
(Nowshera is now in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan)
Also named on the New Abbey Parish War Memorial.

CALLANDER, JAMES. K.O.S.B. - EAST CLUDEN.
James Callander – age 33 – Lance Corporal (8026) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had been brought up in Cluden, Holywood but was a signalman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company, in Kilmarnock when he married in 1908. Later he worked at the Cairn Valley Junction, north of Dumfries and he lived with his wife at 8 David Street in Maxwelltown. He and his brother Albert had served with the 1st KOSB and, as a reservist, James was mobilised and landed with the 2nd KOSB at Le Havre on 15 August 1914. James was wounded and treated in hospital in Versailles in September 1914 but was killed seven months later at the capture of Hill 60.
Born 1882 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire as James Moodie Callander. Son of the late William Callander and of Isabella (Tinnan) Callander of East Cluden, Holywood. Husband of Martha Jane (Craig) Callander of Kilness, Holywood who he married in 1908 in Holywood.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company memorial, now in Ayr Station.
He was the uncle of Robert Henderson and Brother in Law of Ernest, George and James Craig (See below)

CLUCKIE, JOHN. GORDONS - STEILSON FARM.
John Cluckie – age 20 – Private (S/13154) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John had been a shoe maker with the Dundee Equitable Company in the High Street, Dumfries for three years when he enlisted in October 1915. He joined his battalion in France in the Spring of 1916.
Born 1896 in Holywood as John Wright Cluckie. Son of Andrew and Janet (Wright) Cluckie of Steilson Farm, Holywood.
Missing in Action on 18 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Three sons of the late Joseph Craig (who died in June 1915) and of Margaret (McCabe) Craig of Kilness and of East Cluden, Holywood.

CRAIG, ERNEST LESLIE. ROYAL SCOTS – KILNESS.
Ernest Leslie Craig – age 20 – Private (27822) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Ernest was working as a grocer in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in January 1916 and he went to the front in May 1916.
Born 1896 in Holywood.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

George Craig – age 25 – Lance Corporal (22773) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George enlisted in April 1916 and joined the 7th/8th KOSB in France in December but was invalided home six months later. He returned to France in July 1917 and joined the 1st KOSB.
Born 1892 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire as George.
Husband of Mary Gass (Harkness) Craig of Eaglesfield, of Park Place, Lockerbie and of 16 Galloway Street, Maxwelltown who he married in December 1916 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale as George Lyell Craig, while he was with the 3rd KOSB.
Killed in Action on 6 June 1918 and buried in Cinq Rues British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.

He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was fatally wounded during the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 27 September 1915 and buried in Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France.

GRIERSON, ANDREW. K.O.S.B. - BIRKHALL.
Though to be:
Andrew Grierson – age 19 – Private (2393) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was employed in a grocer and wine merchant business in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Dumfries as Andrew Graham Grierson. Son of the late Thomas and Isabella (Jardine) Grierson.
He named his brothers Joseph, Thomas & James as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipli, Turkey.

HENDERSON, ROBERT. K.O.S.B. - EAST CLUDEN.
Robert Henderson – age 20 – Private (40501) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert enlisted as Private (4224) in the 9th Royal Scots in January 1916 but was posted to the 1st KOSB in France in August.
He was wounded on 18 November 1916 and died in the 2/2nd London Casualty Clearing Station at Meaulte a week later.
Born 1896 in Holywood. Son of Robert and Mary (Callander) Henderson of East Cluden, Holywood.
Died of Wounds on 24 November 1916 and buried in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, Somme, France.
He was a nephew of James Moodie Callander. (see above)

HENRY, THOMAS. ROYAL MARINES – KIRKHOUSES.
Thomas Waugh Henry – age 19 – Private (PO/17564) H.M.S. Hampshire, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
Thomas enlisted in August 1914. The cruiser “Hampshire” was sailing to Russia, carrying the Secretary of State for War, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, when she struck a mine laid by the German submarine U-75 near Orkney.
Born 1897 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire.
(His birth was also registered at Kilbirnie, Renfrewshire where his father was a weighman at the steelworks)
Son of John and Agnes (Waugh) Henry of Manor Cottages, Kirkhouses, Holywood.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 5 June 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

KENNING, JAMES. NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILRS. - EAST CLUDEN.
Note: in 1901 the family were using the name Kenning but both James and his brother John were using Keaning by the time they enlisted. John Keaning enlisted as Private (1483) in the Gordon Highlanders.
James Keaning – age 29 – Corporal (37479) 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
James enlisted as Private (4/1360) in the 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers in Bellingham, Northumberland in 1914 and he landed with his battalion in France in April 1915. Later he transferred to the 20th Battalion.
Born 1891 in Holywood as James Henderson Kenning. Son of Robert and Agnes Jane (Callander) Kenning, of East Cluden, Holywood. Husband of Annie (Woodcock) Keaning of Kirtlebridge and of Hollee village, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1915 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
In 1918 Annie married George Broadberry of 97 Fairholm Road Benwell Newcastle in Hollee and later lived at 9H, The Cottages, Scotswood-on-Tyne.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy, France.
Also named on the 4th Northumberland Fusiliers Roll of Honour in the Hexham T.A. Centre.

MACKENZIE, JOHN R. GORDONS – BURNFOOT.
John Roddan Mackenzie – age 27 – Private (S/9452) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John had served his apprenticeship at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Dumfries before he joined the London office of the bank and he enlisted in London in March 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915.
Born 1889 in Holywood. Son of the late John and Mary (Roddan) Mackenzie.
His brothers, Angus and Alexander, and sisters, Jeanie and Mary, lived at Burnfoot of Cluden, Holywood.
Missing in Action on 2 March 1916 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the RBS Roll of the Fallen.

MCLEOD, WILLIAM. SCOTTISH RIFLES – KILNESS.
Thought to be:
William McLeod – age 23 – Corporal (2012 & 43402) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William enlisted in 1914 in the 1/6th Scottish Rifles and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in March 1915, before transferring to the Trench Mortar Battery of the 9th Battalion. He served at Festubert, Loos, Ypres, Armantieres, the Somme and Vimy Ridge and was killed at Arras. He was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal by Captain T. D. Shiels for his actions during a raid on 14 February 1917.
Born 1893 at Millbrae, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire as William Haining McLeod. Son on James and Henrietta (Brown) McLeod of Kilncroft, Shawhead, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Irongray Parish War Memorials.

MARRS, ALEXANDER. K.O.S.B. - KIRKHOUSES.
Not listed by CWGC - see earlier post by Stewartry on page 1.
Alexander Marrs – age 34 – Private (240799) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was a ploughman when he enlisted as Private (2535) in the 5th KOSB in November 1914. He joined the 1/5th KOSB in Egypt in January 1916 but was taken ill in September and admitted to the 31st General Hospital in Port Said. He was admitted to hospital again in December and spent most of the following year in various hospitals due to malaria, enteric fever and tuberculosis until he was evacuated to the Bermondsey Military Hospital in Ladywell, London in January 1918. Alexander was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (361592) in May 1918.
He returned to his home at Kirkhouses, Holywood but was admitted to the Royal Cancer Hospital in Glasgow in October and he died there three months later.
Born 1885 in Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire as Alexander Anderson.
Son of the late Hugh Marrs and of Elizabeth (Anderson) Marrs of Kirkhouses, Holywood.
Died on 20 December 1918.
Burial place not known.

MATHIESON, JAMES. K.O.S.B. - SLAETHORNCROFT.
James Mathieson – age 26 – Private (241508) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James, as Private (5171), joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and, after serving in Palestine, he moved for service in France, landing at Marseilles in April 1918.
Born 1892 in Holywood. Son of Robert and Robina (Mitchell) Mathieson, of Newington, Holywood. Husband of Agnes Weir (Gray) Mathieson of Slaethorn, Holywood and of Broadford, Auldgirth who he married in 1915 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Proville British Cemetery, France.

MUNDELL, ROBERT. K.O.S.B. - KIRKHOUSES.
Robert Mundell – age 27 – Private (29991) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Robert was living with his uncle Joseph and his aunt Agnes at Kirkhouses, Holywood. He was employed at Nether Abington in Lanarkshire when he enlisted as Private (4413) in the 5th KOSB. He joined the 1/5th Battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 but contracted enteric fever and dysentery and was evacuated to hospital in the UK. After he recovered he was posted to the 1st KOSB in France and then transferred to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1890 in Dumfries as Robert Thomson. Son of the late Simon and Catherine (Thomson) Mundell of Gateside, Holywood who married in 1891 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire. Nephew of Agnes Mundell of George Square, Thornhill who he named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

NIVEN, JOHN. LANARKSHIRE YEOMRY. - CORMADDIE.
John Niven – age 21 – Private (2159) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
John was educated at Wallace Hall Academy and was a farmer when he enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in April 1911. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his unit as dismounted troops at Gallipoli in October 1915. He was Mentioned in Despatches for his actions during a Turkish attack in November but was wounded in an accidental explosion of a bomb and died two days later.
Born December 1893 at Barnmuir. Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Walter and Marion (Kirk) Niven of Cormaddie, Holywood.
Died of Wounds on 13 December 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

POOLE, JAMES. K.O.S.B. - COWHILL.
James Poole – age 36 – Private (40295) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James had been employed by Captain Keswick M.P. at Cowhill Tower for eleven years when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (25150) to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in September 1916 but was transferred to the Royal Scots and had been with his battalion for less than a month when he was killed.
Born 1880 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire as James Girr.
Son of the late James and Elizabeth (Girr) Pool. Husband of Mary Agnes (Haining) Pool of Cowhill Lodge, Holywood who he married in 1905 in Holywood.
Mary Agnes Haining or Poole married Heinrich Schenkel (Swiss subject) of Academy Street, Dumfries in December 1917 in Kelvin, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 21 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Andrew Riley – age 19 – Private (20917) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was a farm servant at Birkhall, Holywood when he enlisted in Dumfries in March 1915. He joined his battalion on 7 July 1915 but was killed three months later at Hooge.
Born 1895 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire as Reilly. Son of the late Robert Reilly and of Esther (Hammil) Reilly of 11 Caledonia Street, Cambuslang and of 192 Waddell Street, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.

SMITH, WALTER. K.O.S.B. - POPLAR COTTAGE.
Walter Smith – age 25 – Private (14385) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter served his apprenticeship as a joiner and cartwright in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. He enlisted in October 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Holywood as Walter Halliday Smith. Son of William Smith, Coal Merchant at Holywood Station, and Sarah (Halliday) Smith of Polar Cottage, Holywood.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Mennock Village memorial and on the Sanquhar War Memorial.

SWAN, WILLIAM ROBERT. R.F. ARTILLERY – NEWHOUSE.
William Robert Swan – age 25 – Gunner (125565) 156th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
William was in farm service when he enlisted.
Born 1891 in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Son of the late John and Elizabeth (Laidlaw) Swan of Newcastle-on-Tyne and of Landsdowne Road, West Hartlepool, Durham who had married in 1887 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire.
Nephew of Joseph and Mary Jardine of Lochhill, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 14 November 1916 and buried in Couin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Moniaive.

TEMPLETON, WILLIAM WYLLIE. CANAD. CAMERONS – BLACKPARK.
William Wylie Templeton – age 25 – Lance Corporal (153502) 43rd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Canadian Infantry.
Known as Wylie to his family, he had been a policeman with Dumfriesshire Constabulary for three years, serving at Dumfries, Moffat, Canonbie and Lockerbie, before he emigrated to Canada to join the Winnipeg Police Force in May 1913. He also joined the local militia, the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in July 1915 and visited his family in November on his way to join his battalion in France. Wylie was wounded in June 1916 and evacuated to the Bethnal Green Military Hospital in London where he died.
Born 1890 in Blackpark Farm, Holywood. Son of Jane Templeton of Pilmuir Farm, Lockerbie and of John Hiddleston Stobie, police constable of 137 Drygate, Glasgow.
Died of Wounds on 3 June 1916 and buried in Lockerbie (Dryfesdale) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial in Lockerbie and on the Winnipeg Police Department memorial.

WELLS, DANIEL. ROYAL SCOTS - MUIRSIDE COTTAGES.
Thought to be:
Daniel Wells – age 25 – Private (40637) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Daniel enlisted in the Royal Scots Scots Greys in August 1914 and as Private (9733) he joined the 1st Dragoons in France in October 1915. He was invalided to hospital in Circencester due to illness in April 1916 and was posted to the Royal Scots when he returned to France in December. He was wounded while working with a wiring party but died of his wounds.
Born 1891 in Collin, Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Jessie (Wells) Sharp and step-son of Robert Sharpe of Mouswald Grange, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Grandson of Mr & Mrs Wells of Station Road, Collin, Torthorwald.
Died of Wounds on 21 August 1917 and buried in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Torthorwald Parish War Memorial in Collin village.

WRIGHT, JOHN LOVE. A.I.F. - NEWINGTON.
John Love Wright – age 31 – Private (3126) 34th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John had been employed on the Annan district road roller before he emigrated to Australia in 1914. He was working as a fireman when he enlisted in Albury, New South Wales in November 1916 and he sailed from Sydney in January 1917. He arrived in England in March and, after a visit home in April, he joined his battalion in France in July but was killed three months later.
Born 1886 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Mary (Love) Wright of Newington, Hollywood.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

WRIGHT, ROBERT. BLACK WATCH – SUMMERHILL.
Robert Wright – age 37 – Private (S/7910) 10th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert was a ploughman when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 but in November the battalion moved to Salonika in northern Greece. Robert died in hospital of enteric fever.
Born 1878 at Fairgirth Cottage, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Jane (Murphy) Wright, of Lochbank, Colvend. Husband of Mary Elizabeth (Bigham) Wright of Summerhill, Holywood, later Mrs. Robert Murray of Rutherglen, who he married in 1904 at Colvend.
Died on Active Service on 18 August 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Colvend Parish War Memorial.
