JAMES DALGLEISH, L/CPL. 1st KOSB.
James Buchanan Dalgliesh – age 36 – Lance Corporal (6878) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a tailor when he enlisted in the KOSB in December 1899. He served in South Africa from April 1900 to March 1902, then in India until November 1903, then in Burma until December 1905, then in Aden until December 1906. He returned to the UK with the 2nd KOSB before joining the 1st KOSB in India in December 1911. In August 1914 the battalion was in Lucknow, India.
They returned to the UK via Egypt and then sailed for Gallipoli, landing at Cape Helles in April 1915. James was wounded twice during May before being killed in June.
Born 1879 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Son of late William Dalgliesh and of Margaret (Cowan) Dalgliesh of 12 Ednam Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 6 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan and Langholm War Memorials.


JOSEPH DAVIDSON, PTE. 2nd BORDER REGT.
Joseph Davidson – age 26 – Private (19416) 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.
Joseph was a farm labourer when he enlisted at Carlisle in January 1915. He was posted to the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 but was wounded in August and evacuated back to the UK. He was posted to France in March 1916 and joined the 2nd Battalion on 28 April but was killed at the Somme less than three months later.
Born 1890 at Wetheral, Carlisle, Cumberland as Joseph Stephenson Davidson. Son of Walter and Mary (Millburn) Davidson of Bellingham, Northumberland. Husband of Janet (Hall) Davidson of Burnfoot-on-Esk, Longtown and of Langshaw Cottage, Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1914 in Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOHN A. GILBERTSON, CPL. 1/5th KOSB.
John Alexander Gilbertson – age 22 – Corporal (240168) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a joiner at Millside Bridge in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire and as Private (1217) was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He contracted jaundice in November but recovered to served in Egypt and Palestine where was reported missing at Gaza. John's body was found and buried in Gaza.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Thomas and Maggie Roddick (Campbell) Gilbertson of 3 Downies Wynd, Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOHN R. S. HANCOCK, PTE. 7th CAMERON HDS.
John Hancock – age 23 – Private (S/14067) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John enlisted in October 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 Carlisle, Cumberland as John Richard S. Hancock. Son of Thomas and Hannah Hancock of Avon Cottage, Annan.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


SAMUEL HOUGHTON, A.B. HMS “BLACK PRINCE”
Samuel Houghton – age 30 – Seaman (3980B) H.M.S. Black Prince, Royal Naval Reserve.
Samuel was a fisherman and, as a naval reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914. The cruiser “Black Prince” was sunk during the Battle of Jutland.
Born 1885 in Annan. Son of Richard and Alice Maria (Jackson) Houghton of Annan. Husband of Jemima (Ferguson) Houghton of 2 Vine Court, Downie's Wynd, Annan who he married in 1910 in Annan.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


THOMAS MOSS, PTE. 1/5th KOSB.
Thomas Allan Moss – age 35 – Private (2279) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a stone mason and a member of the Annan Town Band when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1880 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William and Margaret (Ross) Moss of Annan. He lived with his sister Margaret at Summergate, Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOHN MURRAY, PTE. 6th KOSB.
John Murray – age 19 – Private (33092) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at Annan Academy and was working as a dentist in Glasgow when he enlisted there as Private (29226) in the 79th Battalion of the Training Reserve in 1917. He was posted to the 6th KOSB in France.
Born 1898 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Peter (a butler) and Mary Ann (Bethel) Murray of Carlyle Hall, Eastriggs, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 24 March 1918 and buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


P. ALEX. PEATTIE, PTE. 1st CANADIAN DIVN.
Alexander Peattie – age 26 – Private (18386) Canadian Divisional Cyclist Company.
Alexander had served with the Territorial 5th KOSB before he emigrated to Canada in 1911. He was working as a painter and decorator, and was a member of the local militia the Edmonton Fusiliers, when he enlisted in Edmonton in August 1914. He re-enlisted in the 9th Battalion at Valcartier Camp in September and sailed from Quebec in October. He landed in France on 17 October and was transferred to the Cyclist Company in January 1915. Alexander suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died in 18th Field Ambulance.
Born 1888 in Wandsworth, London as Paul Alexander Peattie. Son of Paul and Mary (Thompson) Peattie 20 Ednam Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 24 February 1915 and buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


OSWALD D. REID, TPR. 1st KING EDWARD'S HORSE.
Oswald Douglas Reid – age 24 – Private (1418) 1st King Edward's Horse.
Oswald had enlisted in November 1915 and after being posted in January 1916, had been on leave to visit family in Annan. He was returning to his regiment in Lomford in Ireland when he had gone bathing in the sea at Baldoyle, Howth near Dublin. Oswald got into difficulties and drowned.
Born 1891 in Islington, London. Son of the late Thomas Reid of Annan and of the late Catherine Jane (Artlett) Reid. Brother of Mrs Gertrude Gibbs of Rosebank, Annan and of Mrs Dorothy Godfray.
Died on Service on 18 August 1916 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ALBERT E. RICHMOND, SERGT. 2nd BORDER REGT.
Albert Edward Richmond – age 25 – Sergeant (8002) 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.
Albert was a bandsman in the 2nd Battalion together with his brother Richard. He had attended the Royal Hibernian Military School and was a musician when he enlisted, aged 15, in Dublin in January 1905. He served in South Africa from August 1905 until December 1907. He was promoted to Sergeant in April 1914 and was with his battalion at Pembroke Dock in South Wales in August. They landed at Zeebrugge in October but Albert was killed three weeks later.
Born c.1889 Malta. Son of the late Sarah (McGinnis) Richmond and of Sergeant Major Robert Richmond of the Border Regiment and of his step-mother Sarah Ann Richmond of Howgill, Annan and of Keswick Place, Carlisle Road, Annan.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


THOMAS H. RODGERS, 1/5th KOSB.
Thomas Handford Rodgers – age 35 – Private (2147) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas worked at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1880 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Henrietta (Baxter) Rodgers. Husband of Alice McMichael (Shennan) Rodgers of Battery Street, Annan who he married in 1901 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


JOHN JAMES WALKER, PTE. 1st CAMERONIANS.
John James Walker – age 19 – Private (30112) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was an apprentice electrician in Dornock, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in January 1917.
Born 1898 in Annan. Son of James and Annie (Hyslop) Walker of Carlisle Road, Annan.
Missing in Action on 23 August 1917 and named on the Nieuport Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

I think this is meant to be the brothers James and Thomas Walker who were employed at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan and, as members of the Territorial 5th KOSB, they were mobilised in August 1914. They landed with the battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and both were wounded at the battle of Achi Baba Nullah on 12 July. They were evacuated to hospital, James to Egypt and Thomas to Hampshire.

Born 1897 in Annan. Son of William and Elizabeth (Henderson) Walker of Queensberry Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 9 August 1915 and buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.

and his brother

Thomas Walker – age 21 – Private (848) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, South Stoneham, Hampshire.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of William and Elizabeth (Henderson) Walker of Queensberry Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 6 September 1915 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


Three sons of Charles Watson (solicitor) and of Sarah Elizabeth (Clennel) Watson of Greencroft, Annan.

KENNETH C. WATSON, LIEUT. 10th L.N. LANCS. REGT.
Kenneth Clennell Watson – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
Kenneth was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire before becoming an apprentice engineer at the Cochrane Company factory at Newbie, Annan. He had joined the Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers and as Private (1465) he was mobilised in August 1914. He was commissioned in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1915 and landed with the 10th LNLR at Boulogne. Kenneth was gassed and wounded and was evacuated to hospital in Glasgow in July 1916. He had returned to France only a few weeks before he was killed.
Born 1895 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named the Annan War Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour..


P. BALFOUR WATSON, CPL. 1st CANADIAN DIVN.
Patrick Balfour Watson – age 26 – Private (437089) 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Patrick was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire and joined his father's business for three years before emigrating to Canada in 1911. He was working as a clerk for the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan and was a member of the local militia, the Saskatchewan Fusiliers, when he enlisted at Edmonton, Alberta in May 1915. He sailed from Canada with the 51st Battalion in April 1916 and was posted to the 15th Battalion in France but a month later he was killed.
Born 1890 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1916 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


W. G. DOUGLAS WATSON, CAPT. 1/5th KOSB.
William George Douglas Watson – age 36 – Captain, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Annan Academy and at Edinburgh Academy before he became a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1903. He served his apprenticeship and became a solicitor in his father's practice in Annan when he qualified in 1907. He was also joint agent of The Royal Bank of Scotland's branch in the town. He was commissioned in the Territorial 5th KOSB in March 1909 and was mobilised in August 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was promoted to Captain in October. Later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1881 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named the AnnanWar Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial, on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.



INSEL WOODWARD, PTE. 1st CANADIAN MTD. RIFLES.
Insel Woodward – age 26 – Private (911486) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Insel was educated at Annan Academy and at Skerry's College in Glasgow before he joined the Post Office in July 1909. In 1911 he was a clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank in London and was a boarder at 54 Sterndale Road in Hamersmith. He joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce in February 1912 and was at the branch in Vegreville, Alberta when he enlisted in Edmonton in May 1916. He served at Neuville, St. Vaast, Vimy Ridge, Lens and Amiens.
Born 1893 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Sephton) Woodward of 21 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1918 and buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named the AnnanWar Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial and on the CBC Roll of Honour.
