PTE. MAURICE ROBSON, CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.
Maurice Robson – age 25 – Private (S/14230) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Maurice had served his apprenticeship as draper in Langholm and in 1911 he was living in Govan, Glasgow as a wholesale draper. He enlisted in Glasgow and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Canonbie. Son of John and Catherine (Minto) Robson of Birnie, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial. France.


PTE. ADAM ROUTLEDGE, MACHINE GUN CORPS.
Adam Routledge – age 19 – Private (131572) 25th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Adam was employed as a cross-cutter and tailsman by the Timber Supplies Department when he enlisted in May 1917.
Born 1899 at Harelaw Garden, Canonbie. Son of Myrtle Routledge. Grandson of Adam and Jane (Barton) Routledge of Blinkbonny, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. ROBERT SNOWDEN, SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS.
Robert Snowden – age 27 – Private (S/17066) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert enlisted as Private (S/6833) in the Black Watch and then spent some time as Private (1/200) in a Training Reserve Battalion before he joined the 2nd Seaforths.
Born 1890 in Canonbie. Son of the late William Snowden (died 1915) of Byreburnfoot and of Elizabeth (Borthwick) Snowden of Bowholm, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. JAMES STEELE, K.O.S.B.
James Steele – age 28 – Private (14515) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James landed at Boulogne with the 7th KOSB in July 1915. He was wounded a year later and when he recovered he was posted to the 1/5th KOSB in Palestine
Born 1889 in Canonbie as James Weatherstone Steele. Son of Thomas and Mary Scott (Weatherstone) Steele of Rowanburn, Canonbie. Husband of the late Elizabeth (Armstrong) Steele (died 1913) who he married in 1910 in Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. JOHN JAMES STEELE, ROYAL SCOTS.
John James Steele – age 19 – Private (51110) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a bricklayer's labourer and was working at Gretna when he enlisted as Private (121290) in the Lothian and Borders Horse Yeomanry in February 1917. He was posted to the Royal Scots in February 1918 and joined the 12th Battalion in March. He was wounded in April but after treatment at the 103rd Field Ambulance he rejoined his unit three weeks later. John was wounded again in October and died two days later in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station near Ypres.
Born 1899 in Rowanburn, Canonbie as Steel. Son of Matthew and Jeanie (Davidson) Steele of 23 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 16 October 1918 and buried in Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. ARCHIE D. TELFER, K.O.S.B.
Archibald Douglas Telfer – age 30 – Private (17959) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archie joined the 2nd KOSB in France in June 1915. He was badly wounded the following year and when he had recovered he was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB.
Born 1886 at Buccleuch, Ettrick, Selkirkshire. Son of Elizabeth (Telfer) Irving and step-son of James Wilson Irving of Claygate, Canonbie who had married in 1891 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 24 April 1917 and buried in Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux, France.

PTE. ALEX. WYLIE, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Wylie – age 22 – Private (23384) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Rowanburn, Canonbie. Son of John and Jane (Irving) Wylie of 54 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 3 September 1916 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.


PTE. JOHN M. WYLIE, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
John Murray Wylie – age 22 – Private (40556) 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was a ploughman at Byreburnside, Canonbie when he enlisted as Private (25270) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916. He was mobilised in June and joined the 7th/8th KOSB but was transferred to the 2nd RSF in France in October 1916. He was wounded in April 1917 and treated at the 16th General Hospital at Le Treport before being evacuated to Netley Hospital in Hampshire. When he had recovered he was posted to the 12th RSF in Egypt in November 1917. John served in Palestine before his battalion moved to France in May 1918.
Born 1896 in Canonbie. Son of Arthur and Mary (McGlasson) Wylie of Claygate, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 31 October 1918 and buried in Vichte Military Cemetery, Belgium.

1939 – 1945



MISS ELEANOR TERESA PEARSON ARMSTRONG, BRITISH DIPLOMATIC STAFF.
Eleanor Teresa Pearson Armstrong – age 30 – Civilian.
Eleanor had been employed in the Carlisle City Treasurer's office before taking a post as a secretary with the International Labour Office of the League of Nations at Geneva. Following the outbreak of war she was engaged as one of the secretaries of the British Minister at Sofia, Bulgaria and in March 1941 she was amongst the staff of the Legation who had arrived at the Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul after diplomatic relations between the UK and Bulgaria had been broken off. A bomb exploded in the Legation's luggage killing a number of hotel staff and two secretaries.

Born 1910 at Roadend, Canonbie. Daughter of the late John Armstrong and of Margaret (Davidson) Armstrong of 24 Scotland Road, Carlisle.
Died on 12 March 1941 and thought to be buried in Ferikφy Protestant Cemetery, Istanbul. Turkey.
Named on the Register in St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey


Pt. WILLIAM JAMES BYERS, ROYAL ARTILLERY.
William James Johnstone Byers – age 32 – Gunner (325657) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
In March 1941, the 155th sailed from the River Clyde bound for India. However in August they were sent to Malaya and were continually in action until the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942.
Chungkai was one of the base camps on the notorious Burma-Siam railway and contained a hospital and church built by Allied prisoners of war.
Born 1911 in Canonobie. Son of James and Mary Beatrice (Johnstone) Byers of Watchhill, Canonbie.
Died on Service on 5 October 1943 and buried in Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand.


Pt. JOHN CAMPBELL, THE QUEEN'S OWN CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.
John Campbell – age 18 – Private (14741845) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
The 51st Highland Division spent a week guarding a number of the River Maas crossings between Liθge and Namur before moving forward on 7 January 1945 and on 10 January the 5th Camerons moved through the 5th Seaforths in the direction of Ronchamps. There was little enemy resistance but thick snow, minefields and shelling caused a number of casualties. John was buried in Ronchamps but was re-interred at Hotton in May 1947.
Born 1926 in Canonbie. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Campbell of Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 10 January 1945 and buried in Hotton War Cemetery, Belgium.

AB. WALTER DARGUE, HMS St. ANGELO, ROYAL NAVY.
Walter Dargue – age 21 – Able Seaman (P/SSX 33888) H.M.S. "St. Angelo" Royal Navy.
St. Angelo was a Royal Navy Shore Base in a large bastioned fort in Birgu, Malta, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour. Walter was killed during one of the many air raids on the island.
Born 1921 Brampton, Cumberland. Son of George and Janet (Jackson) Dargue, who married in 1920 in Longtown, Cumberland. Husband of Olive (Davidson) Dargue of Langholm who he married in Nichol Forest, Border, Cumberland in 1940.
Killed in Action on 25 April 1942 and buried in Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery, Malta.


St. WALTER THOMAS DOUGLAS, ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Walter Thomas Douglas – age 20 – Sergeant/Untrained Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (987549) Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Walter was onboard an aircraft of 5 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit when it crashed off the North Devon coast. His body was recovered from the sea near Pembroke Dock, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Walter was buried in Langholm Cemetery on 16 October 1941.
Born 1921 in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter Thomas Douglas and Isabella Mary Graham (Routledge) Douglas, of Hagg-on-Esk, Canonbie.
Died on Active Service on 27 August 1941 and buried in Langholm Cemetery. (CWG)


Cl. WALTER DICKSON FLETCHER, BORDER REGIMENT.
Walter Dickson Fletcher – age 30 – Corporal (3597942) 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment. 1st Airlanding Brigade, 1st Airborne Division.
The first of the Horsa gliders carrying the 1st Border Regiment landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the position, designated as DZ-X for the Parachute Brigade. On 25 September the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine. Walter died of wounds while a prisoner of war.
Born 1914 in Rowanburn, Canonbie. Son of Thomas and Catherine (Dickson) Fletcher.
Died of Wounds on 24 September 1944 and buried in Utrecht (Soestbergen) General Cemetery, Netherlands.

THIRD OFFICER, ISABEL MARY MILNE HOME, WRNS, ROYAL NAVY.
Isabel Mary Milne Home – age 23 – Third Officer, H.M.S. Cormorant, Women's Royal Naval Service. “Cormorant” was the Royal Naval Air Station at Gibraltar.
Leading Wren Isabel Mary Milne Home was promoted to Third Officer in April 1940. Isabel was one of 21 women from the WRNS who had volunteered for cypher and wireless duties in Gibraltar. They were onboard the steam passenger ship “Aguila” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-201. None of the Wrens survived the sinking.
Born 1918 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Daughter of Sir John Hepburn Milne Home, Kt., D.L., J.P., and of Lady Milne Home (Mary Adelaide Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound) of Irvine House, Canonbie and of Walkerburn, Peeblesshire. Killed by enemy action/ Lost at Sea on 19 August 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire,
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial and on the Langholm Parish Church WW2 Memorial.


ROBERT WALLACE KOMISKI, PILOT OFFICER, ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Robert Wallace Komiski – age 32 – Flying Officer (116808) 61 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was commissioned from Sergeant (1060034) in December 1941. He was an air-gunner when his Lancaster bomber, which had taken off from RAF Syerston near Newark in Nottinghamshire on a mine laying mission, was shot down over the North Sea off Esbjerg, Denmark.
Born 1909 in Low Beveridgewell, Dunfermline, Fife. Son of Archibald McNeill Kominski and Agnes Mary (Mclay) Komiski of Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 4 July 1942 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


Pt. GEORGE THOMSON PATERSON, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
The connection to Canonbie is not known but he is thought to be:
George Thompson Paterson – age 20 – Fusilier (14000181) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
After the withdrawal from Norway in May 1940, Infantry Brigades of the 49th (West Riding) Division were stationed in Iceland. As a result, a new divisional insignia, featuring a Polar Bear standing on an icefloe, was adopted. The Division, now including the 11th RSF, landed at Normandy on 11 June 1944. As part of Operation Totalise the 11th RSF were to progress along the axis of the Caen to Falaise road. The objective was to take positions in the village of Vimont, approximately due north of Falaise itself. The attack opened on 10 August and George was killed that day and buried at Vimont but was re-interred in August 1945.
Born 1924 in Muthill, Perthshire as George Thomson Paterson. Son of James and Isabella Paterson of Perth.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1944 and buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France.

O.S. MURDOCH McLEAN SOLMAN, HMS HOOD, ROYAL NAVY.
Murdoch McLean Solman – age 18 – Able Seaman (P/JX 157519) H.M.S. Hood, Royal Navy.
The battle-cruiser “Hood” exploded and sank after being hit by shells from the German battleship “Bismark” during the Battle of the Denmark Straits.
Born 1922 in Canonbie. Son of Captain (191132) Reginald Francis Solman, R.E.M.E. and of Janet (Scott) Solman of Nelson, Lancashire who had married in 1919 in Canonbie.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 May 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


Gr. ANDREW VERE, ROYAL ARTILLERY.
Andrew Vere – age 33 – Gunner (326799) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Andrew had joined the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1939 and was captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. He was amongst 250 men transported on the “England Maru” in October 1942 to Formosa (Tiawan) to work in the Kinaseki Copper Mine. He slaved there until October 1944 when due to ill health he was transferred to the camp at Shirakawa where he died. He was re-interred in Sai Wan in July 1947.
Born 1911 at Caulside, Canonbie. Son of Jeanie (Vere) Grant of Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Service on 14 April 1945 and buried in Sai Wan War Cemetery, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial and on the Langholm Parish Church WW2 Memorial.


Pt. JOHN WIGHTMAN, BORDER REGIMENT.
John Wightman – age 29 – Private (3604115) 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment.
1st Airlanding Brigade, 1st Airborne Division.
