Not listed on UKNIWM

This memorial is in Kirkgunzeon Parish Church (pronounced Ker-gunyun) (OS Map Ref NX 866 667). The names boxed in black are those who died and I am afraid that the memorial is rather faded. It is better in a high res photo, so PM me with your email address if you would like me to send one. There are some differences between the names on this memorial and those on the Kirkgunzeon civic memorial that would benefit from research.

Names of those who died (as far as I can determine from the script):
Thomas Clow
Robert Gilchrist
James Milligan
Robert Milligan
David Carter
Robert Scott
Walter Roan
John Paton
Felix Davitt Gordon Highlanders
James Hunter Cameron Highlanders

Hello All,

Thankyou for the great photos Spoons!

James and Robert Milligan were the older brothers of John Milligan who won the DCM and bar for two daring deeds in WW1; capturing a German gun and capturing and holding German troops single handedly until reinforcements arrived.

The family story goes that John had just been told of his brothers' deaths in the field when he went on to perform his first deed. I don't know whether this is true or not but we do know that John adored his big brothers and lied about his age to follow them to war.

Hope this sheds a bit of light and I look forward to perhaps hearing something of the other men on this Roll of Honour.

Regards,
Glaschu

Kirkgunzeon Parish Church has closed. The final service was held on Sunday 13 October.
A new location for the Roll has still to be decided.

I have received confirmation today, from 2 different village residents that both this and the WW2 Roll of Honour were relocated to the Village Hall after closure. The deconsecrated church is now owned by D & G council, and remains empty, as only the church itself is for sale and is now empty. It has so far apparently been impossible to arrange a successful sale, as the building has no services like electric or gas or sewage, which would have to be installed across the still open graveyard.

As of April 2022 the Church has finally been sold and conversion work is well underway into a home.

When this Roll of Honour was moved to the Maxwell Memorial Hall in the village in 2018, due to it's poor condition and investigations into the men named on it, a new Centenary Roll of Honour was produced, with more names.

AS good photograph of the new Roll is on the village website-
