Sits in the centre of the village near the pub and Post Office.

PETER BARNES, Pte. Royal Scots.
Note: civil records all show the family name as Barns.
Peter Barnes – age 28 – Private (15571) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter served under the name William Scott. He joined the 2nd Royal Scots in France in December 1914.
Born 1887 in Ancrum as Peter Barns. Son of John and Mary Ann (Leslie) Barns of Causewayend, Ancrum.
Died of Wounds on 30 September 1916 and buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


WM. F. CULLEN, Pte. Royal Scots.
William Fowler Cullen – age 22 – Private (353005) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
William enlisted as Private (1804) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry. He was posted as Private (6893) to the 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion of the Royal Scots in 1916 and then transferred to the 2nd Battalion.
Born c.1895 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. (Source: SDGW but cannot trace)
Son of the late Robert Cullen of Niddrie, Winchburgh, West Lothian and of Mary (Fowler) Cullen, from 1908 Mrs Edward Hymers of Lidgate, Ancrum,
Died of Wounds on 9 April 1917 and buried in Beaurains Road Cemetery, Beaurains. Arras, France.


ROBt. DAVIDSON, Pte. K.O.S.B.
Possibly:
Robert Davidson – age 21 – Private (6815) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a forester at Gala House, Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Roberton, Roxburghshire as Robert Moffat Davidson. Son of Matthew and Catherine (Moffat) Davidson of Todshawhaugh, Borthwick Water, Roberton, of Billerwell, Bonchester Bridge, Hobkirk, and of 2 Weensland Terrace, Hawick, all Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hobkirk Parish War Memorial and on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.

JAMES EASTON, Pte. Royal Scots.
James Easton – age 22 – Private (16811) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a farm servant at Rawflat Farm, Ancrum when he enlisted in December 1914. He was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France in August 1915. James died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
Born 1893 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Walter and Mary (Temple) Easton of Rawflat Farm, Ancrum and of Haymount, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 17 March 1916 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.


JAMES FOWLER, Driver M.G.C.
James Fowler – age 25 – Private (60737) 215th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
In 1901 James was living with his grandparents William and Mary Fowler at Hiltons Hill Toll, Ancrum. He was still with them in 1911 and was working as an assistant shepherd. He enlisted as Private (8660) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but transferred to the MGC before going to France.
Born 1892 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Agnes Fowler.
Killed in Action on 16 June 1917 and buried in Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension, France.


HUGH S. GIRVAN, Pte. Scot. Rifles.
Hugh Stanley Girvan – age 19 – Private (12534) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Hugh was a gardener at Monteviot, Ancrum when he enlisted in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France in July 1915.
Born 1897 in Garvald, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of the late James Gordon Girvan, gardener at Ancrum House, (died 1912) and of Jane Carter (Wilson) Girvan of Ancrum.
Killed in Action on 6 November 1916 and buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Somme, France.


THOMAS K. HUNTER, Pte , 49th Btn. Can.
Thomas Kirkwood Hunter – age 30 – Private (434746) 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas had emigrated to Canada in 1911 and was a carpenter when he enlisted in Calgary, Alberta in February 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in October 1915 and joined his battalion in France in May 1916 but he was killed four months later.
Born 1886 in Ancrum. Son of the late Joan (McLachlan or McGlauchlan) Hunter (died March 1916) and of James Hunter of Howden, Ancrum.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.

ROBt. J. JEFFREY, Pte. Royal Scots.
Robert James Jeffrey – age 28 – Private (9476) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1891 Robert, aged 2, was living with his grandparents James and Annie Jeffrey in Hawick and was with his grandmother and two uncles in Glasgow in 1901. He was 18 and was a blacksmith when he enlisted in the Royal Scots in January 1906. He served with both the 1st and 2nd Battalions in India from January 1908 and was with the 1st Royal Scots in Allahlabad in August 1914. The battalion returned to the UK in November and landed at Le Havre in December 1914 but moved to Salonica in northern Greece a year later. Robert was wounded in September 1916 and later contracted malaria. He was being evacuated to hospital in Malta when he died on the hospital ship.
Born 1888 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of Annie Jeffrey (from 1890 Mrs. Thomas Chapman) of Woodhead Farm, Ancrum.
He named his grandmother Annie Jeffrey as his legatee.
Died on Active Service on 13 November 1916 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.


JAMES KENNEDY, Pte. Sherwood Fors.
James Kennedy – age 30 – Private (13532) 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment)
James and his brothers Norman (Royal Scots) and Thomas (Royal Engineers) enlisted in August 1914. The Sherwood Foresters had returned from India and had been in France since November when James joined them in December but he was killed two months later.
Born 1884 in Earlston, Berwickshire. Son of Thomas Kennedy, Inspector of Poor and Clerk of the School Board, and of Catherine (MacKay) Kennedy of Ancrum.
Missing in Action on 30 January 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

NORMAN KENNEDY, Sec-Lt. R.S.F

Norman Kennedy – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Norman was a civil servant at the Scottish Insurance Commission in Edinburgh and as a member of the Territorial 4th Royal Scots (Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the 1/4th Royal Scots at Gallipoli as Private (1419) in June 1915 and then served in Egypt until he returned to the UK in September 1916. Norman was commissioned in the Royal Scots Fusiliers in March 1917 and joined the 1st RSF in France in June but he was fatally wounded in September and died a month later in the 7th General Hospital in St. Omer.
Born 1894 in Ancrum. Son of Thomas Kennedy, Inspector of Poor and Clerk of the School Board, and of Catherine (MacKay) Kennedy of Ancrum.
Died of Wounds on 31 October 1917 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Scottish Insurance Commission memorial now in St. Andrew's House, Edinburgh.

JAMES SCOTT, Pte. M.G.C.
James Scott – age 23 – Private (97782) 214th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
James enlisted as Private (28311) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but went to France with the 214th MGC in March 1917. He died in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station north of Poperinge.
Born 1894 in Ancrum. Son of Thomas Brown Scott and Ellen (Johnston) Scott of Ancrum.
Died of Wounds on 5 September 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


WILLIAM SHIELL, Pte. , K.O.S.B.
William Shiell – age 23 – Private (201237) 4th (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a farm worker when he enlisted in he 1/4th KOSB November 1915. He was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB but became ill in late 1917 and was evacuated home. He died of tuberculosis in the Craigleith Military Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1895 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Ellen (Shiell) Shiell (died April 1919 in Ancrum) and of David Shiell of Lilliards Edge, Ancrum, St. Boswells.
Died on 9 July 1919 and buried in Ancrum Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


CECIL A. TURNBULL, Lce-Cpl. K.O.S.B.
Cecil Andrew Turnbull – age 20 – Lance Corporal (29388) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
Cecil had served his apprenticeship with Hilson & Murray, solicitors in Jedburgh before becoming clerk to Mr Hilson, Procurator-Fiscal for Roxburghshire. He enlisted in February 1916 and was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France but transferred to the 7th/8th Battalion.
Born 1897 in Edinburgh. Son of William and Jessie (Keddie) Turnbull of Harestanes, Ancrum.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


A. WEATHERSTONE, Pte. A & S.H.
Note: most civil records show the family name as Weatherston.
Adam Weatherstone – age 20 – Private (S/11449) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Adam was wounded on 15 September and died six days later in one of the Casualty Clearing Stations at Dernancourt, near Albert.
Born 1895 in Ancrum. Son of George and Margaret (Dodds) Weatherstone of Wellrigg Farm, Ancrum/St. Boswells.
Died of Wounds on 21 September 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Boswells Parish War Memorial.


JAMES YOUNG, Sgt. Scot. Rifles.
James Young, Military Medal – age 21 – Lance Sergeant (12532) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1901 James, age 4, was with his siblings and his mother at his grandfather James Young's home at Hundalee Smithy, Jedburgh. He was in Ancrum when he enlisted in August 1914 and he joined the 2nd Cameronians in France in March 1915. At some point he transferred to the 1st Battalion and he was awarded the M.M. for his actions on 21/22 March 1918.
Born 1896 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Adam Young (died 1901) and of Ellen or Helen Linton (Paxton) Young of Hundalee Smithy, Jedburgh.
He named his aunt Janet H. Veitch as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Jedburgh War Memorial.
