BALLANTYNE W.G. ROYAL NAVY. ASSISTANT PAY. 1918

The Rothesay and Bute Roll of Honour lists this sailor as serving in the TS Duchess of Argyll and that he died of illness at Southampton, 19th July 1918.

The Duchess of Argyll was a paddlesteamer which had done the Ardrossan to Kyles of Bute service before the war.

It was requisitioned as a transport ship - presumably for cross-channel service and I'm guessing here crew signed up too.

Ballantyne isn't recorded by the CWGC and if he was a civilian in the Mercantile Marine rather than the Royal Navy ih he died of pneumonia in 1918 in a hospital it would explain his non-commemoration.

Can anyone see the July 1918 death certificates for Portsmouth to see what it says about him?

Thanks

Adam

Adam - FreeBMD has:

Ballantyne William G 38 Southampton 2c 15

Not on-line of course, you'd have to send for the DC.

I am researching the above soldier who served in the Durham Light Infantry. Does anyone have any details of his family and background?

This is my best guess John.
You will need to get the records to confirm.
CWGC
McVICAR, PETER
Lance Corporal (204478) 1/5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
Date of Death: 23/04/1917
Memorial: Arras Memorial, France.

Soldiers who Died in the Great War has
Formerly 1410 Argyll Mountain Battery RGA. Residence, Greenock, but does not have birthplace.
Army Registers of Soldiers effects has
Mo. Jane D. McVicar (This record is indexed as McNicar with a service number of 8474)

Scotlandspeople has:
Niven McVicar married Jane Dewar in 1870 in Kirkmichael-Glassary, Argyllshire.
Peter was born 1899 in Kirkmichael-Glassary, Argyllshire.
Jane (Dewar) McVicar died age 76 in Greenock East in 1926.

In 1891 at West Kames, Glassary were:
Niven McVicar 53, Jane McVicar 42, Margt McVicar 18, Archd McVicar 11, Christina McVicar 9,
Mary McVicar 6, John McVicar 3, Peter McVicar 1, Elizabeth McVicar 10 Mon.

The 1/5th DLI was a Territorial Army Battalion and the soldiers would have been renumbered from 4 to 6 digits in late 1916/early 1917 so this might explain why he has 8474 on Soldiers effects but 204478 on CWGC.

I hope this helps (a bit) and welcome to the project
Very Happy
