WILLIAM ALLAN, CPL. GORDONS
William Allen – age 32 – Corporal (8433) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a farm servant when he enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in November 1901. He served in India from October 1902 until he was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1909. William was mobilised at the outbreak of war and joined his battalion in France in September 1914.
Born 1882 in Lauder. Son of James and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Allan of Addington, Oxton, Berwickshire. James died five days before his son.
Husband of Evealyne (Wark or Ross) Allan of The Row and of the High Street, Lauder who he married in 1912 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 14 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder United Free Church memorial.


ANDREW ANDERSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Anderson – age 20 – Private (6869) 2/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a shepherd when he enlisted. He died of meningitis in Galashiels.
Born 1894 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of Robert Anderson and Mary Logan (Shankly) Anderson of Threepwood, Lauder and of Pendical, Southdean, Hawick.
Died on Service on 6 November 1914 and buried in Lauder Cemetery. (CWG)

Robert was employed by Professor Sir John Rankine at Threepwood, Lauder when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Whittingham, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of Robert Anderson and Mary Logan (Shankly) Anderson of Threepwood, Lauder and of Pendical, Southdean, Hawick.
Killed in Action on 28 September 1918 and buried in Anneux British Cemetery, France.

GEORGE ANDERSON, PTE. GORDONS
George Anderson – age 19 – Private (285069) 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
George was employed as an under-gardener at Allanbank House when he enlisted. He was mobilised as Private (301588) in the 6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but was transferred to the Gordons in France. George had been at the front for only a short time when he was killed.
Born 1898 in Lauder. Son of George Watson Anderson and of Christina (Scott) Anderson of the Old Schoolhouse, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


JAMES ANDERSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Anderson – age 18 – Private (6775) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
By 1911 the Anderson family had moved to Lauder. James was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Crailing, Roxburghshire as James Hogg or Whitelaw. Son of James Hogg and of Lizzie (Whitelaw) Anderson, and step-son of Andrew Anderson of Braidshawrig, Lauder and of Cattleshiel, Duns, Berwickshire who married Lizzie in 1900 in Cavers, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


WILLIAM BELL, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Bell – age 27 – Private (201157) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a farm servant at East Mains, Lauder when he enlisted there. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8113) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1890 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Robert Bell and of Isabella (Thomson) Bell of Comslie Farm, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

JOHN BRODIE, PTE. AUSTRALIANS
John Alexander Brodie – age 28 – Private (3119) 46th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John emigrated in September 1913 and was farming at Koolberin, Western Australia when he enlisted in November 1916. He sailed from Freemantle in December and joined his battalion in France in June 1917. John was killed at Broodseinde, Passchendaele, Belgium.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Alexander and Janet (Renwick) Brodie of High Street, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1917 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder United Free Church memorial.


WILLIAM BROWN, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Renwick Brown – age 21 – Private (24887) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 William, aged 4, was living with his grandparents John and Mary Brown, and the rest of the family, in Lauder.
William was wounded and captured and he died as a Prisoner of War. He was buried in Lambres Communal Cemetery but was re-interred at Souchez in April 1923.
Born 1896 at Woodheads, Lauder as William Renwick. Son of Robert Renwick and of Jane Brown. His grandmother Mary was named as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 4 May 1917. and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

Four sons of Richard and Janet (Redpath) Bruce of Leadervale, Lauder.

ANDREW BRUCE, SAP. ROYAL ENGINEERS
Andrew Bruce – age 37 – Sapper (95456) 99th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Andrew went to France in September 1915 but a month later the 22nd Division, having been moved by train to Marseilles, began to embark for Salonika in northern Greece. Andrew died in the 31st Casualty Clearing Station at Janes.
Born 1881 in Lauder. Husband of Agnes (Kay) Bruce of Dalkeith and of Lauder who he married in 1907 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 12 May 1918 and buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece..
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


GEORGE BRUCE, PTE. SCOTS GUARDS
George Bruce – age 27 – Private (7103) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
George and his brother Thomas (see below) were serving in the Scots Guards at Aldershot when war was declared and they landed with their battalion at Le Havre on 13 August 1914.
Born 1888 in Lauder.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1915 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

James Dickson Bruce – age 26 – Corporal (M2/120520) "F" Siege Park Workshops, Royal Army Service Corps.
James was a blacksmith living with his wife and family at 38 Jewel Cottages, Portobello, Edinburgh when he enlisted in September 1915. He joined 594 Company attached to the 40th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery in February 1916. James volunteered to serve in the Army of Occupation in April 1919 but he died of diphtheria in the 47th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1893 in Lauder. Husband of Janet Renton (Lough) Bruce of Renton Terrace, Eyemouth, Berwickshire who he married in 1911 in Eyemouth.
Died on Service on 11 May 1919 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


THOMAS BRUCE, PTE. SCOTS GUARDS
Thomas Redpath Bruce – age 24 – Private (7021) 3rd Batalion, Scots Guards.
Thmas and his brother George (see above) were serving in the 1st Scots Guards at Aldershot when war was declared and they landed with their battalion at Le Havre on 13 August 1914. He was badly wounded and evacuated to the London Hospital in Whitechapel where he had a leg amputated and where he died.
Born 1890 in Lauder.
Died of Wounds on 2 December 1914 and buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

JOHN COLTHERD, PTE. CAMERONS
Thought to be:
Joseph Coltherd – age 23 – Private (S/5751) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph enlisted at Lauder and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1891 in Innerwick, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of the late John Coltherd (died 1910) and Janet (Stewart) Coltherd of Aikengall, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on the Legerwood Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire and on the Oldhamstocks Parish War Memorial in East Lothian.


THOMAS R. DICKSON, PTE. SCOTS GUARDS
Thomas Dickson – age 33 – Private (2667) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas was educated at Musselburgh Academy before enlisting. He served in the South African War from 1899 to 1902. He was a mason in Musselburgh until, as a reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge in October 1914. He was killed by a sniper at Loos.
Born 1881 in Lauder as Thomas Rutherford Dickson. Son of the late Alexander Dickson (died 1911) and of Violet (Rutherford) Dickson Of Morn Street, Alyth, Perthshire and of "Tearo", Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 29 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial, on the Galashiels War Memorial and on the Alyth Parish War Memorial.


ADAM FLEMING, PTE. K.O.S.B.

Adam Fleming – age 19 – Private (41762) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Adam was posted as Private (27052) to the King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1897 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of James and Agnes (Rae) Fleming of 53 Douglas Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 22 May 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

John was a plumber in Coldstream, Berwickshire and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of Constable Alexander and Janet (Wood) Galbraith of Leitholm Police Station and of Gordon, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Coldstream Burgh and Parish War Memorial.


ANDREW GUTHRIE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Guthrie – age 24 – Private (25657) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a shepherd on the Trabroun Farm, Lauder when he married Elizabeth from the nearby farm of Pilmuir in 1916.
Born 1893 in Selkirk. Son of James and Mary Ann (Murray) Guthrie of Trabroun. Husband of Elizabeth (Dickman) Guthrie who he married in 1916 in Lauder.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


GEORGE HALLIDAY, SAP. ROYAL ENGINEERS
Note: When he died in 1912 George's father William was still using the family name of Holiday.
George Halliday – age 37 – Private (44412) 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers.
George was a mason in Lauder when he enlisted as Private (179431) in the Royal Engineers. Later he was posted to the SWB in France.
Born 1879 in Morebattle, Roxburghshir as George Holiday. Son of the late Elizabeth (Steel) Holiday (died 1879) and the late William Holiday (died 1912) Husband of Janet (Renton) Halliday of High Street, Lauder who he married in 1905 in Lauder as George Halliday.
Killed in Action on 13 April 1917 and buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.

WILLIAM HALLIDAY, L/CPL. H.L.I.
William Halliday – age 22 – Lance Corporal (23019) 17th Battalion (3rd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
William served his apprentice ship as a draper in Lauder and was employed by Mann, Byars & Co. in Glasgow when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915
Born 1893 in Lauder. Son of Thomas and Helen Gelaine (Brown) Halliday of Loan View, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 7 August 1916 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.
Also named on the Lauder United Free Church memorial.


DAVID HARDIE, PTE. A.&.S.H.
David Hardie – age 23 – Private (2105) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
David had been employed in a solicitors office in Lauder before taking a position in the Town Clerk's Office in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He enlisted from there and landed with his battalion in France in December 1914.
Born 1892 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Jane (Simpson) Hardie of High Street, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 26 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Alloa War Memorial.


JOHN HOPKIRK, PTE. K.O.S.B.
John Hopkirk – age 17 – Private (7369) 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
John was a ploughman when he enlisted. He died of pneumonia at Threepwood Lodge, Langshaw, Roxburghshire.
Born 1897 Sorrowfield Mains, Melrose as John Pringle Hopkirk, also registered at Langshaw as the family had been living on the Carolside Estate. Son of the late Helen (Robertson) Hopkirk (died 1913) and of John Hopkirk of Threepwood Lodge and of Townhead, Newstead, Melrose.
Died on Service on 23 February 1915 and buried in Lauder Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial as Hobkirk and on the Lauder Parish Church memorial as John Hopkirk.

ALEXANDER HUNTER, PTE. CANADIANS
Possibly:
Alexander Hunter – age 21 – Private (29102) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. (Canadian Scottish)
Alexander had been employed at Kippielaw Mains, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire before he emigrated to Canada in June 1911. He was a railroad cableman in British Columbia and was a member of the local militia, the 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, in August 1914. Volunteers were enlisted for overseas service at Valcartier Camp, Ontario in September 1914 and the 16th Battalion sailed from Canada in October. They landed at St. Nazaire in February 1915 but Alexander was killed a month later.
Born 1893 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshitre. Son of Maggie Hunter of Hawick. Grandson of the late Peter and Sarah (Grieve) Hunter of Duck Row, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 14 March 1915 and buried in Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Jedburgh War Memorial.


WILLIAM HUNTER, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Hunter – age 21 – Private (6777) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was working in a sawmill in Earlston, Berwickshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander Hunter of East End, Lauder, a guard on the Lauder Light Railway, and of Alison (Grieve) Hunter.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


JOHN JOYCE, L/SGT. ROYAL SCOTS
John Joyce – age 34 – Lance Sergeant (14679) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
As a young man John had been a ploughman at Shielfield Farm in Lauder but he was a gamekeeper at Brodick Castle on Arran when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1882 Clovenfords, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Joyce (died 1912) and of the late John Joyce (died 1916) of West Mains, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 14 July 1916 and buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban, France.
Also named on the Brodick War Memorial and on the Island of Arran Roll of Honour.

ALEXANDER P. KELLY, CPL. ROYAL SCOTS
Alexander Purves Kelly – age 30 – Lance Corporal (19815) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Alexander worked in a solicitors' office in Lauder when he enlisted in mid-1915. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 but he was killed six months later on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
Born 1886 in Lauder. Son of the late Andrew Kelly (died 1908) former schoolmaster at Cleekhimin School in Lauder, and Christina (Purves) Kelly of High Street, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

Andrew Purves Kelly – age 26 – Private (40831) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
In 1911 Andrew was an assistant grocer, lodging at Blackwood Crescent in Newington, Edinburgh. He enlisted in Edinburgh and was posted to the 1st RSF.
Born 1890 in Lauder. Son of the late Andrew Kelly (died 1908) former schoolmaster at Cleekhimin School in Lauder, and Christina (Purves) Kelly of High Street, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.1, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

John Irvine Kinnon – age – Private (6779) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a farm servant at Newbigging Walls, Lauder when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire. Son of Thomas and Susan (Haston) Kinnon of Lauderbarns, Lauder and of Viewforth Place, Broxburn, West Lothian.

JAMES LAIDLAW, PTE. H.L.I.
James Laidlaw – age 31 – Lance Corporal (7418) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 James was serving with the 1st HLI in India and in August 1914 they were in Ambala as part of the Sirhind Brigade. They moved to France via Egypt, landing at Marseilles on 1 December 1914. James died in hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1884 in Lauder. Son of the late Robert Laidlaw (died 1904) and of the late Mary (Calder) Laidlaw (died 1905) of High Street, Lauder.
His siblings Charles, Robert, John, Thomas, Alexander, David, Isabella, Elizabeth, Mary and Helen were named as his legatees.
Died of Wounds on 20 March 1915 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


WILLIAM LOCKIE, L/CPL. CAMERONS
William Lockie – age 29 – Private (S/10069) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William played football with the Legerwood Village team in Berwickshire and as a reservist he rejoined his regiment in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France in September 1914 but he was killed six weeks later near Ypres in Belgium.
Born 1885 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew Robson Lockie and of Ellen Veitch Lockie of Cross Street, Kelso, Roxburghshire and of Blainslie, Selkirkshire. (near Lauder and Legerwood)
Killed in Action on 5 November 1914 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Kelso War Memorial.


ROBERT LOGAN, 2nd LIEUT. K.O.S.B.
Robert Logan – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert as Corporal (1254) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry landed with his squadron in France in September 1915 and served with the Regiment as Corporal (120106) until he was commissioned in the KOSB in April 1917.

THE HON. A , MAITLAND, MAJ, CAMERONS
The Hon. Alfred Henry Maitland – age 41 – Major, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alfred was commissioned in the 1st Camerons in 1894 and as a Lieutenant he took part in the Nile Expedition in 1898. As a Captain he served during the South African Wars and by 1904 he was the Battalion Adjutant. He then served on the Staff at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst until 1909 when he became the Adjutant to the 10th Battalion of the King's Regiment (The Liverpool Scottish) In 1913 he rejoined his Regiment in Edinburgh and was promoted to Major. Alfred landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914 but he was killed a month later at the Aisne.

Born 1872 in Nowgong, Central India. Son of Frederick Henry Maitland, 13th Earl of Lauderdale, and of the late Charlotte Sarah (Sleigh) Maitland (died 1879) Husband of Edith (Scobell) Maitland who he married in 1905 in London.
Missing in Action on 14 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on an individual memorial in Lauder Parish Church, on the Westminster School Roll of Honour and on the Hoylake Roll of Honour in the Wirral, Merseyside.


WILLIAM MAUCHLINE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Mauchline – age 24 – Private (201159) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William joined the 1/4th KOSB as Private (8115) in Egypt and served in Palestine before they moved to France in April 1918. At some point he was transferred to the 1st KOSB.
Born 1894 in Fogo, Berwickshire. Son of Archibald Vallance Mauchline and of Euphemia (Carruthers) Mauchline of Thirlestane, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

WILLIAM MIDDLEMISS, PTE. ROYAL SCOTS
William Middlemiss – age 20 – Private (375686) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was brought up by his aunt and uncle, Mary (Renton) Kerr and George Kerr of North Street, Duns, Berwickshire. He died in the 29th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1897 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Middlemiss (died 1899) and of Margaret Purves (Renton) Middlemiss (died 1906)
His aunt Mary Kerr was named as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 5 December 1917 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Duns Burgh and Parish War Memorial as W. Middlemas.


THOMAS MOORE, PTE. CANADIANS
Thomas Moore – age 41 – Private (147224) 78th Battalion (Winnipeg Grenadiers) Canadian Infantry.
In 1901 Thomas was working as a gardener in Liberton, Edinburgh and he married there in 1906. The family moved to Canada in 1910 and Thomas was a member of the local militia the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers and was employed as a teamster when he enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in July 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 but he was admitted to hospital with appendicitis on arrival at Liverpool. After the operation he was posted to Depot and Reserve Battalion duties until he rejoined his old battalion in France in October 1917. Thomas was wounded during the Battle of the Canal du Nord and he died in the 14th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1877 in Lauder. Son of William and Elsie (Swinton) Moore of Lauder (where William was a Schoolmaster and Provost), of Rosewood, St. Andrew's, Fife and of Glenview, Lauder. Husband of Agnes Sandiland (Gray) Moore of 254 Austen Street, Winnipeg who he married in 1906 in Liberton, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 30 September 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille. France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

THOMAS NISBET, PTE. R.A.M.C.
Thomas Nisbet – age 30 – Private (64262) 111th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Thomas was living with his sister Mrs Janet (Nisbet) Pringle in Dunblane Perthshire when he enlisted in August 1915. He landed with the 16th (Irish) Division in France in December 1915.
Born 1887 in Galashiels [Ladhope] Son of the late Barbara (Scott) Nisbet (died 1900) and of the late George Nisbet (died 1915) of Lauder Hill, Lauder.
Thomas named his sister Janet (Pringle) Nisbet of Crofts of Cromlix, Dunblane, Perthshire in his will.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


WILLIAM NOBLE, PTE. RIFLE BRIGADE
William Noble – age 31 – Rifleman (202301) 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
William enlisted as Private (018357) in the Army Ordnance Corps. He was transferred to the Rifle Brigade where he served in the 10th & 12th & 1st Battalions. He had been back at the front for a few weeks after recovering from wounds when he was killed.
Born 1887 in Ladhope/Langshaw, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Helen (Ramsey) Noble of Blainslie near Lauder. Husband of Mary Jane (Reid) Noble of Blainslie who he married in 1911 in Eccles, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 16 June 1918 and buried in Le Vertannoy British Cemetery, Hinges, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


ROBERT OLIVER, CPL. SCOTTISH RIFLES
Robert Oliver – age 31 – Corporal (20730) 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1901 the family were at Allanshaws Farm in the former Landshaw Parish, Melrose but very near to Stow, Midlothian and near to Lauder.
Robert joined the 10th Cameronians in France in October 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 11th Battalion which had sailed from France for Salonika in northern Greece in November 1915.
Born 1887 in Ladhope/Landshaw, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert and Marion (Clark) Oliver of Stow, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 19 September 1918 and named on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial and on the Lauder United Free Church memorial.

THOMAS PATERSON, PTE. LANCS. FUS.
Thomas Paterson – age 35 – Private (49753) 23rd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
Thomas was a gamekeeper when he enlisted. He served as Private (24978) in the 6th and 2nd Battalions of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and as Private (402152) in the Labour Corps before joining the Lancashire Fusiliers.
Born 1883 in Westruther, Berwickshire. Son of Hugh and Elizabeth (Lauder) Paterson of Spottiswood, Westruther. Husband of Jessie (Baikie) Paterson of Newbigging Walls, Lauder who he married in 1907 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 29 October 1918 and buried in St. Leger Churchyard, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, and on the Westruther Parish War Memorial together with his brother John, Private (7321) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers killed on 12 July 1915.


WILLIAM PATERSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Paterson – age 20 – Private (6781) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed as a grocer in Lauder when he enlisted at the outbreak of war. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Leadhills, Lanarkshire. Son of John Paterson (chauffeur at Harryburn House) and of Mary (Moffat) Paterson of Harryburn Cottage, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Leadhills Village War Memorial.


ROBERT H. ROBERTSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Robert Halliday Robertson – age 20 – Private (201592) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a clerk in a solicitor's office in Lauder when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Lauder. Son of John and Robina (Halliday) Robertson of High Street and of Dawson Brae, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1918 and buried in Moeuvres British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.
