UKNIWM Ref: 46439
OS map ref: NT240231

The UKNIWM entry states that this memorial has been moved three times in its lifetime:
When the church was drowned under the building of Megget reservoir it was moved to the old Cappercleuch Church but when this was closed, it was moved to its present cairn in 1995.
It was rededicated at its present site in November 1996.

My thanks to Secret Skwirrel for the following information which he spied on the St. Marys Angling Club website

Giving something back
A few weeks ago Ian asked me to have a look at the war memorial close to the AA box in the village. He said Mrs Mitchell (the elder) could remember when the memorial was easily read as the printing was highlighted in black against a golden background, but now the whole plaque was black (with corrosion) readable only at close quarters. He asked if I would be interested in restoring it to its former glory.

A small part of my work is restoring clock dials for the jewellery trade so I had a look at it and on examination found under the black patination the base metal was yellow brass.
So today Ian and I went along and carried out some work on the plaque and in less than an hour we had her looking shipshape. Now all that is required is a rub with a very fine abrasive pad two or three times a year which will keep the plaque in tip top condition as a fitting memorial to those who paid the ultimate price in the quest for freedom from tyranny.

And what a difference they have made to the plaque, it is now looking braw.

My feeling is that this topic should be re-named "Megget war memorial, Cappercleuch".

I was going to say "Megget Parish", but on doing some homework on that one, the answer should be "no". The parish of Megget had been part of the united parishes of Lyne & Megget (although Lyne parish and Megget parish were not geographically attached to one another). However, from 15 May 1891, the old Megget parish (Peebles-shire) was transferred into Yarrow parish, and became part of Selkirkshire at the same time. This was one of many acts of tidying up of parish and county boundaries that took effect on that day, following the work of the Boundaries Commission given that task in the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889.

So by the time of WWI, Megget civil parish did not exist.

James Calder is possibly as detailed below. Although the Megget War Memorial states he served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and the Book of Remembrance for Tweeddale concurs, the latter gives the date of death as 9/4/1918, which accords with the CWGC record for James Calder. CWGC has him as serving with the Gordon Highlanders.

Name: CALDER, JAMES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Service Number: 202977
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders, 6th Bn
Date of Death: 9/4/1918
Age: 39
Additional Information: Son of the late George and Jessie Calder, of Duns, Berwickshire; husband of Annie Cockburn Calder, of Linden Lea, St. Boswell's, Roxburghshire.
Panel Reference: Panel 115 to 119
Memorial: Loos Memorial

Also named on Peebles War Memorial.
