Ettrickbridge was once known as Kirkhope. With the building of a bridge over the Ettrick Water at the east end of the village in the late 1700s it became known as Ettrick-Brig-End, and later as Ettrickbridge.


THOMAS ADAMSON, 10th SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Thomas David Macfarlane Adamson – age 19 – Private (39031) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Thomas was employed in the office of Alexanders, Solicitors in Selkirk when he enlisted.
Born 1899 in Kirkhope. Son of William Macfarlane Adamson and of Agnes Cleghorn (Inglis) Adamson of Rose Lodge Ettrickbridge.
Missing in Action on 1 August 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.


JAMES AITKEN, KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
James Aitken – age 25 – Private (7448) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was resident in Selkirkshire when he enlisted in Galashiels. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was fatally wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1890 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire as James Malcolm Aitken.
Son of Charles (a gamekeeper) and Margaret (McNiven) Aitken of Angle Cottage of Ardentinny Loch Long, Argyllshire.
Died of Wounds on 19 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Ardentinny War Memorial together with his brother Charles Aitken, Private (301640) 1/5th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders who died on 28 September 1918.


ANDREW CROSBIE, 4th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Andrew Crosbie – age 33 – Private (200961) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman in Selkirkshire when he enlisted in the 4th Reserve Battalion of the KOSB in Galashiels in January 1915. He joined his battalion as Private (7699) in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1883 Mertoun, Berwickshire. Son of Joan Crosbie of Fauldshope Lodge, Ettrick Valley, Kirkhope.
Killed in Action on 11 September 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.

ANDREW DALGLEISH, 4th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Listed by CWGC as Andrew Watson but they note that he served as Andrew Dalgleish.
Andrew Dalgleish – age 19 – Private (6491) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Kirkhope as Andrew Robert Dalgleish. Son of Ellen Murray (Dalgleish) Watson of 4 South Port, Selkirk and step-son of the late John Watson who married in 1898 in Kirkhope.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


WILLIAM DODDS, LOTHIAN & BORDER HORSE.
Possibly:
William Dods – age 21 – Private (771) 1/3rd Scottish Horse Yeomanry.
William was a gamekeeper in the Haddington district of East Lothian when he enlisted. He landed with the Regiment at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in September 1915 but he contracted dysentery and was evacuated to the University War Hospital in Southampton where he died.
Born 1894 in Traquair, Peeblesshire. Son of Peter (a gamekeeper) and Annie (Burns) Dods of Peel Lodge, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot, near Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Died on Service on 23 November 1915 and buried in Caddonfoot Parish Churchyard, Selkirkshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial.


ROBERT FLEMING, 9th HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY.
Robert Fleming – age 22 – Private (350255) 15th Battalion (1st Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was employed at Upper Tofts Farm in Kirkton, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the 2/4th King's Own Scottish Borderers in Hawick in October 1915. He was posted as Private (201143) the 1st KOSB in France but was transferred to the 15th HLI. Robert died in the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Gezaincourt.
Born 1896 at Sunderland Hall, Selkirk. Son of the late Margaret Fleming and of Robert Fleming, shepherd at Hartwoodmyres, Kirkhope.
Died of Wounds on 24 June 1918 and buried in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme. France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial, on the Hawick Roll of Honour, and on the Cavers and Kirkton Parishes War Memorial in Deanbrae, Roxburghshire.

JAMES GOWANS, 1st CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.
James Bryden Gowans – age 26 – Private (S/23026) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 James was living with his family in Kirkhope. He became a stretcher bearer with his battalion but was reported missing in action. His remains were recovered from the battlefield after the war and he was re-interred in November 1919.
Born 1891 in Manor, Peeblesshire. Son of George and Barbara (Bryden) Gowans of Inner Huntly, Ettrick, Kirkhope.
Killed in Action on 17 November 1917 and buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.


ADAM KERR, 2nd ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
Adam Kerr – age 28 – Private (40597) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Adam was an engineman with Messrs Trotter & Son in Newtown St. Boswells, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in June 1916 and was posted as Private (25257) to the 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in October 1916 but was transferred to the RSF.
Born 1889 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. Son of Agnes (Turner) Kerr (died 1917) and of William Kerr of Helmburn, Ettrick, Selkirkshire and of Kirkhope Cottages, Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Bootham Cemetery, Heninel, France.
Also named on the Newton St. Boswells District War Memorial.


WALTER LINTON, 2nd LIFE GUARDS.
Not listed by CWGC but under review.
Walter Dodds Linton – age 27 – Trooper (3245) Reserve Household Battalion, Life Guards.
Walter had been a booking clerk with the North British Railway Company and was a parcel porter at Waverley Station in Edinburgh when he enlisted in July 1917. He was at Windsor when he became ill and he was in the Cavalry Hospital Detention Rooms when he drowned while taking a bath.
Born 1890 at Cathaugh in Kirkhope. Son of David and Margaret (Dodds) Linton of Spences's Buildings, Stow, Midlothian.
Died on Service on 19 December 1917.
Burial place not yet known.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial.

JOHN LITTLE, 7th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
John Robert Little – age 18 – Private (7751) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was serving his apprenticeship with Mr Christie, merchant, in Selkirk when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed less than three months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1897 in Kirkhope. Son of John and Sophia (Baker) Little of Hawkshaw, Ettrickbridge, Kirkhope.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


DOUGLAS MORRISON, 16th ROYAL SCOTS.
Douglas Morison – age 19 – Private (18869) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Douglas was a paper merchant when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 but he was killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1896 in Edinburgh as Douglas Morison. Son of Archibald Cowan Morison and Lizzie Mills (Scott) Morison of 18 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh.
Douglas's mother Lizzie was born in 1868 at Gilmanscleuch in Kirkhope where her father Henry Scott was a farmer.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


JOHN PHEASANT, KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY.
John Henry Pheasant – age 33 – Private (24111) 2nd Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
In 1911 John, aged 21, was a footman living with his widowed mother at Bulwick Wansford, Northamptonshire. He was posted to his battalion in Salonica in northern Greece and he died in the 28th General Hospital at Thessaloniki.
Born 1889 in Oundle, Northamptonshire. Son of the late William (died 1910) and Sarah (Quincey) Pheasant of Oundle. Husband of Margaret Jane (Brown) Pheasant of Brockhill, Ettrickbridge, Kirkhope who he married in 1916 in Malpas, Whitchurch, Cheshire. Margaret was born in 1879 in Kirkhope.
Died on Active Service on 7 August 1918 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.

ANDREW ROWAN, 2nd SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Not listed by CWGC.
Andrew Hill Rowan – age 34 – Private (25065) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Andrew had been a tweed mill worker in Galashiels and then a railway surfaceman but he was working in a rubber manufacturing plant in Edinburgh when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised in June 1916 but was diagnosed with a pre-existing illness and was discharged as “not likely to become an efficient soldier” in August 1916. Andrew died of cancer in the Longmore Hospital, Newington, Edinburgh.
Born 1882 in Ladhope, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Margaret (Hill) Rowan (died 1901) and of the late Thomas Rowan (died 1916) of Haliburton Place, Galashiels. Husband of Elizabeth Muir (Redpath) Rowan of Oakwood, Kirkhope and of Downfield Place, Edinburgh who he married in 1908 in Selkirk.
Died on 7 March 1917. Burial place not known.


WILLIAM RUSSELL, CANADIAN SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS.
William Russell – age 39 – Lance Corporal (129734) 72nd Battalion (The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry.
In 1901 William, aged 20, was a commercial traveller living with his parents at Cathcart in Renfrewshire. He was a salesman in Vancouver, British Columbia when he enlisted in September 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1916 and landed at Le Havre in August. William was killed on the first day of the battle at Vimy Ridge.
Born 1880 in Govan, Glasgow. Son of the late William Russell (died 1913) and of the late Jane (Kennedy) Russell (died Jan. 1917) of Fairholme, Ettrickbridge, Kirkhope, Formerly of Langside, Glasgow.
Husband of Marion Forrest S. Russell of 19th Avenue East, Vancouver, British Columbia.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


THOMAS SCOTT, 1st Bn. MACHINE GUN CORPS.
Thomas Scott – age 20 – Private (114448) 1st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Thomas enlisted as Private (243038) in the Highland Light Infantry.
Born 1898 at Langhope in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire.
Son of Thomas and Jessie (Anderson) Scott of Langhope, Ashkirk.
Killed in Action on 20 April 1918 and buried in Post Office Rifles Cemetery, Festubert, France.
Also named on the Ashkirk War Memorial, Selkirkshire.

WILLIAM SHIEL, 4th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
William Shiel – age 31 – Private (201442) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William spent his early life at Outerside, Roberton, Selkirkshire before the family moved to Kirkhope and he was working at Deanburnhaugh, Roberton, when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8505) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1886 in Megget, Peebleshire. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Johnstone) Shiel of Singlie, Ettrick, Kirkhope.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Roberton Parish War Memorial.


JOHN STORRIE, 6th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
John Storie – age 24 – Private (24951) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was working at Mount Benger, Yarrow when he enlisted.
Born 1893 in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Glendinning) Storie of Fauldshope, Kirkhope and of Gilmanscleuch, Kirkhope.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Yarrow Parish War Memorial, on the Yarrow Church memorial and on the Yarrow Roll of Honour at Yarrow Feus as John Storie, Missing, 1917, KOSB, Mount Benger.


HUGH TURNBULL, 4th ROYAL SCOTS.
Thought to be:
Hugh Macdiarmid Turnbull – age 24 – Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots attached to the 5th/6th Battalion.
Hugh enlisted at the outbreak of war as Private (1256) and landed with the 1/4th Battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was evacuated home due to illness. He was commissioned in December 1915 and spent some months in Ireland before he was posted to France in July 1917.
Born 1893 in Darjeeling, India. Son of the late Mary Jane (Macdiarmid) Turnbull formerly of Callander, Perthshire (died 1898) and of the late Rev. Archibald Turnbull, B.D. former minister of Darjeeling, India (died 1905) and step-son of Katherine Agnes (Ferguson or Wemyss) Turnbull of Poldrait, Linlithgow who had married Archibald in 1900 in St. Giles, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 5 September 1917 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Linlithgow War Memorial.

Hugh and his sisters were noted as visitors at Kirkhope farm in August 1910. (Southern Reporter 25/8/1910 p.3)

JAMES WAUGH, 2nd Bn, MACHINE GUN CORPS.
James Waugh – age 30 – Private (67951) 2nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
James had been a farm servant in the Lauder district of Berwickshire for several years before he enlisted. He had returned from leave to his unit in the Army of Occupation just a few days before he drowned while bathing in the Rhine at Monheim in Germany.
Born 1889 in Roxburgh. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (White) Waugh of Oakwood, Kirkhope.
Died on Service on 3 September 1919 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on an individual plaque in Kirkhope Parish Church provided by the men of his company.


ROBERT WILKIE, ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.
I cannot trace any record for this man.
A Robert Wilkie was a gamekeeper at Shielshaugh, Ettrickbridge and a member of the local Rifle Club. He enlisted in August 1914.
