Dores - Inverness District

The Dores war memorial takes the form of a memorial arched gateway to the kirkyard. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed on two bronze panels set into the face of the archway. As far as I know there is no listing of any WWII dead but I could not get access inside the kirk on my last visit.
Dores was the location of a small pottery established by the Surrey artist Mary Fraser-Tytler, wife of artist G.F. Watts. The couple were pioneers of the arts and crafts movement and hoped to generate employment by teaching local people the skills required to produce high quality pottery (mainly large garden vases). The venture was not a success but apparently some panels found in the pottery were used in the design for the face of the war memorial. These panels were said to be similar to those used at the Chapel in Compton, Surrey, and so were probably the work of Mary Fraser-Tytler, or Louis Reid Deuchars, the manager of the pottery who had also worked in the Surrey Chapel. Unfortunately these panels have not survived the weather.
The memorial stands in the village at the entrance to the kirk.
For more information on Louis Reid Deuchars see the 'Sculptors' section at the end of the forum.

The inscriptions on the panels below read:
'TO GIVE UNTO
THEM
BEAUTY FOR
ASHES
OIL OF JOY FOR
MOURNING'

AND

'THE GARMENT
OF PRAISE
FOR THE SPIRIT
OF HEAVINESS'

This is a watercolour of the Dores war memorial as it would have originally appeared. Louise Boreham and the South Loch Ness Heritage Group are of the opinion that the watercolour was a study for the memorial by Mary Seaton (wife of G.F. Watts). The background is nothing like Dores and they suspect Mary Seaton painted the work in Compton where she lived and where the decorative panels intended for the memorial were originally located. The panels are the same as those above the door of the Compton Memorial Chapel and may have been spare ones made when the chapel was being built. I wonder if a cast could be made of those in the Compton Memorial Chapel which would allow the Dores memorial to be restored to its original condition?
The images are supplied and reproduced by kind permission of the South Loch Ness Heritage Group and my thanks to them for all their help and assistance.
Copyright South Loch Ness Heritage Group.

Above is the watercolour as it has been eMailed to me.
Below is an enhanced image which shows the details more clearly.

And a photo of an old postcard from Louise Boreham's collection, supplied and reproduced by kind permission of Louise Boreham.

The artist Mary Seaton's full name was Mary Seton Fraser-Tytler and there are two Fraser-Tytlers listed on the memorial. The family owned the local Aldourie estate.

I can only find one one CWGC

Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery
Unit Text: "D" Howitzer Bty. 36th Bde

I think the EC Fraser-Tytler is actually E G for Edward Grant Fraser-Tytler who owned Aldourie and was Mary's half-brother. He had served in the Lovat Scouts in the Boer War and died in 1918. He is not listed on the CWGC database but presumably involved himself on war service during the First World War.

I think I'm right in saying Patrick Fraser-Tytler was his nephew and stepson. Patrick's mother (Christian Alice) married his father's brother (Edward Grant) after his father (James William) died in 1904 and his aunt (Edith Adriana) died in 1910.

The Cameron captain listed will be Allan George Cameron, Edward Grant F-T's son-in-law who married his daughter Hester Fraser-Tytler.

CAMERON, ALLAN GEORGE
Initials: A G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 34
Date of Death: 25/09/1914
Additional information: Son of Donald Cameron of Lochiel 24th Chief of the Clan Cameron, and of Lady Margaret Cameron; husband of Hester V. Cameron (nee Fraser-Tytler), of Aldourie, Inverness. Gazetted Oct., 1899.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 1.
Cemetery: BOURG-ET-COMIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY

On the Lovat Scouts section is Pte. C. WHYTE M.M.

He is also named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

L.CPL. CHARLES WHYTE. M.M.
Charles Morrison Whyte, Military Medal – age 27 – Private (125077) 3/1st Battalion, Lovat Scouts.
Charles was employed at the Tweed Vineries in Cloverfords, Caddonfoot when he enlisted in 1914.
He landed as Private (2225) with the 1/1st Lovat Scouts at Gallipoli in September 1915 but was invalided home. After he recovered he joined the Special Scouts and went to France in October 1916. He was a noted sniper and was awarded a M.M. in early 1917.
The Scouts formed a number of detachments used for observation and sniping work in France.
Born 1890 in Dornoch, Sutherland. Son of William and Isabella (Morrison) Whyte of Aldourie Home Farm, Dores, Inverness-shire.
Killed in Action on 22 May 1917 and buried in Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension, France.

From Cloverfords.net
"Tweed Vineyards was created by William Thomson in 1869 and became the crème de la crème of the grapevine, producing six tons of Muscat and Gros Colman grapes per year, then delivered by rail as far south as Covent Gardens and Harrods of London."
