1939-1945


MAJOR JACK ELLIOT, M.C. 6th K.O.S.B. OF WEDDERLIE.
Jack Elliot, Military Cross – age 24 – Major (88447) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at the Loretto School in Musselburgh, where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps, until December 1938. He was commissioned in the Territorial KOSB in May 1939 and mobilised at the outbreak of war. He landed with the 6th KOSB at Normandy in June 1944 and was wounded at Le Haut de Bosq, south-west of Caen. For his actions he was awarded a M.C.
Jack was killed while leading his men during the attack on the German town of Goch. He was buried at Udem but was re-interred at Rheinberg in July 1946.
Born 1921 in Edinburgh as John. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Louisa Smithson (Lindsay) Elliot of Wedderlie and of Thirlestane, Westruther.
Killed in Action on 18 February 1945 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on an individual memorial in Lauder Parish Church, on the church memorial, on the Lauder Parish War Memorial and on the Loretto School memorial.


CRAFTSMAN JOSEPH LOWRIE, R.E.M.E.
Joseph Lowrie – age 37 – Craftsman (14210891) Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Joseph had been a gardener Clifton Park, Linton, Roxburghshire before he became a chauffeur to Colonel Home at Bassendean House, Westruther. Joseph was attached to the 2nd Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry in the 6th Armoured Division when he was killed.
Born 1907 in Mordington, Berwickshire. Son of the late Andrew Lowrie, formerly a shepherd at Hundalee, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire (died 1942) and of Mary Farmer (Waddell) Lowrie of 18 Thornfield Avenue, Selkirk. Husband of Agnes (Fergie) Lowrie of Paxton, Hutton, Berwickshire who he married in 1933 in Paxton, Hutton.
Killed in Action on 20 July 1944 and buried in Assisi War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Paxton War Memorial and on the Jedburgh War Memorial.
