This is in the list above, does anyone know what it refers to?

Lennel is in Coldstream parish but its church was abandoned in 1718.

Just seen an item on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/scotland/south_scotland to say there is a proposal to move Selkirk's Boer war memorial from the market place to the town's main war memorial. Anyone have any details?

I think that's a shame if they do. It may be worth checking that the current location is for a reason. I think it's on a well/ drinking trough. That may be the memorial and not just the plaque.

The Hawick News is reporting a WW1 project led by the Scottish Borders Council archives which is illustrated by a photograph of what looks like a Melrose and District (including from what can be seen on the scroll - Abbotsford, Gattonside, Darnick, Newstead, Leaderfoot) Roll of Honour 1914-1919. It looks like it lists names, ranks and units. It seems to be split into two sections across four columns and is so long I think it those who served as well as died.

It looks like it has been rolled up in storage for some time and is certainly the worse for wear round the edges.

This may help explain why the Melrose civic war memorial has no ranks or regiments listed if those details were on a roll of honour once displayed nearby in Melrose.

Peeblesshire News - on line 18 August 2019
Divided opinion over Peebles war memorial trees
By Hilary Scott
Reporter

THE British Legion has raised concerns that over-grown trees are spoiling Peebles war memorial which is considered one of the finest in Scotland.
The trees form part of the memorial gardens in the quadrangle of the Chambers Institute.
However, roots of both the trees are now starting to affect the path around the gardens and one tree is blocking the view of the eternal flame statue in the far corner on the memorial.
Peebles Community Council has asked locals for their feedback on the trees being removed.

Scott Rae said: “We’ve had a few responses, all of them have commented that they really do appreciate the trees being there, particularly in autumn because they are rowans and the colours are bright.
“One of the commenters works at the library, and received feedback from people that they like those trees. I think a bit more information from the trustees would be useful to understand what they are suggesting.”
Councillor Stuart Bell is one of the trustees on the Chambers Institution Trust.

He said: “The situation is that the British Legion is very concerned about the quality of the environment around the war memorial and they see the trees as instrumental and a significant part of that. The British Legion regularly talks to the Chambers Institution Trust about what can be done in order to maintain that as a peaceful and respectful environment.
“It was the British Legion that raised with the Trust the fact that the trees are out of scale and proportion in comparison with the site, and they had suggested that perhaps those trees should be cut down. Particularly the one that is blocking an eternal flame structure, but the concern is the roots.”
Councillor Bell explained that the decision would be made by the Chambers Institution Trust.
He added: “We took advice from the council’s neighbourhood services who told us that you can’t just cut two trees down without replacing them. My own view is that we should replace them with trees.

“In other words, we should respect that those trees have grown up and matured and replace them with something that adds to the environment and isn’t so overarching and that might not be a concern in regard to the people who have made representation.”
Councillor Bell requested that the consultation carried out by Peebles Community Council is passed onto the Chambers Institution Trust for consideration.

I heard recently that Eddleston church might be closing in the medium/long-term, and indeed it's the only church specifically listed as such in the (draft) Melrose & Peebles Presbytery Plan for 2020s.

https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6006257
has a photo and details of a memorial cairn at Peat Law, Blyth, Lauder, Berwickshire.
"This impressive memorial cairn is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer map as George’s Cairn. The cairn is approximately 2m wide at the base and 3.5m high and is topped with an upright stone. There is a 2.5m loose stone surround which I presume is to prevent cattle from damaging the cairn. It is dedicated to Captain George Nisbet McDougal, M.C. who was killed during the D-Day Landings in 1944. The inscription on the cairn is as follows:"

IN MEMORY OF
CAPT. GEORGE NISBET McDOUGAL, M.C.
629TH FLD. SQN. ROYAL ENGINEERS
SERVED WITH 8TH ARMY
FROM ALAMEIN TO TUNIS
KILLED IN ACTION AT
LA BRĘCHE NORMANDY
ON D. DAY 8TH JUNE 1944, AGE 23
BURIED AT HERMANVILLE
1921 – 44

SON OF CAPT. ARTHUR R. McDOUGAL,
BLYTHE & HIS WIFE H MAUD LOGAN
OF BIRKHILL & GRANDSON OF GEORGE
McDOUGAL WHO CAME TO BLYTHE IN
1852 & G.G. GRANDSON OF GEORGE
NISBET WHO CAME TO FLASS IN 1801.
GOODBYE

ALSO OF HIS COMRADES
2 OFFICERS & 24 MEN
WHO FELL THEN & LIE IN
HERMANVILLE

George is also named on the Lauder Parish and Burgh War Memorial as:

GEORGE McDOUGAL, M.C. CAPT. ROYAL ENGINEERS
George Nisbet McDougal, Military Cross – age 23 – Captain (125156) 629 Field Regiment, Royal Engineers.
George was educated at Pyatshaw School in Lauder, at St. Mary's School in Melrose and at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh before entering the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in the summer of 1939. He was commissioned in March 1940 and promoted to Lieutenant in September 1914. As acting Captain, he was awarded a M.C. in recognition of gallant and distinguished services with the 8th Army in Libya in 1943 and received his medal at Buckingham Palace a month before he was killed at La Breche during the D-Day landings at Normandy.

Born 1921 in Lauder. Son of Arthur Robert and Helen Maud (Logan) McDougal of Blyth, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 6 June 1944 and buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, France

Southern Reporter - Thursday 29 April 1915.

LORD LAUDERDALE'S SON.
MEMORIAL TABLET UNVEILED LAUDER PARISH CHURCH.
A service in memory of the late Major the Hon. Alfred H. Maitland, son of Lord Lauderdale, was held in Lauder Parish Church on Thursday. A handsome tablet, which has been erected by the family, was unveiled during the service. The tablet, which is of white statuary marble with a border of Swedish green marble, is erected on a pillar alongside the Lauderdale pew and bears the following inscription : "To the glory of God and in memory of Major the Honourable Alfred Henry Maitland, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, and third son of the Earl of Lauderdale, who was killed in France in the Battle of the Aisne whilst fighting for his country against the Germans on the 14th September, 1914, aged 41 years. This tablet is here placed by his sorrowing father, by the Countess of Lauderdale, and by his brothers and sisters, all whom loved him most, dearly. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."
