WILLIAM M. OVENS, PTE. MT. A.S.C.
William Mitchell Ovens – age 33 – Private( M2/194156) 818th Mechanical Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
William was a baker's van man in Stow, Midlothian when he enlisted in 1915 and he was posted to Mesopotamia. He died there of pneumonia and was buried in Kazvin (now Qazvin) British War Cemetery but he was re-interred in Tehran.
Born 1888 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire. Son of John and Margaret (Hunter) Ovens of Netherhowden, Oxton, Channelkirk. Margaret died in December 1919. Husband of Elspeth Simpson (Wilson) Ovens of Townhead, Stow, Midlothian who he married in 1912 in Channelkirk.
Died on Service on 26 November 1919 and buried in Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial.


ADAM D. RENWICK, PTE. R.S.F.
Adam Dalgleish Renwick – age 37 – Private (40551) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Adam was a shepherd living at Friars Knowes in Oxton, Channelkirk when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined his battalion in France in October.
Born 1880 in Penicuik, Midlothian. Son of Halbert and Margaret (Dalgleish) Renwick of Friars Knowes, Oxton and of Tollishill, Oxton.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


JOHN SCOTT, PTE. R.S.F.
John Scott – age 19 – Private (15928) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was employed at Arniston Colliery, Gorebridge when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1896 in Channelkirk. Son of John and Christina (Denholm) Scott of Standpretty, Borthwick, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1915 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.

JOHN S. WEIR, SERGT. R.H.
John Stark Weir – age 19 – Sergeant (4225) 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John was educated at Dalkeith High School in Midlothian and enlisted in Lochgelly, Fife.
Born 1897 in Heriot, Midlothian. Son of William and Jane Shiels (McLean) Weir of Roselea, Oxton, Channelkirk.
Killed in Action on 21 July 1916 and buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, France.
Also named on the Dalkeith High School memorial.

ROBERT WEIR, LIEUT. R.S.

Robert Weir – age 29 – Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert had been a teacher at Carmuirs in Falkirk and at Dalkeith High School before becoming headmaster at Channelkirk in October 1912. He gained a commission at the outbreak of war, landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 and was promoted in June 1915.
Born 1886 at Gilnockie Schoolhouse in Canonbie Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Jane Shiels (McLean) Weir of Roselea, Oxton, Channelkirk.
Killed in Action on 16 November 1916 and buried in Beaumont-Hamel British Cemetery, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Channelkirk School and on the Dalkeith High School memorial.

Their father William was headteacher at Gilnockie School and was for many years the headteacher at Heriot School. He retired to Oxton in 1912 and died there in December 1917.

1939 – 1945

ROBERT ALLAN, ROYAL CORPS SIGNALS
Robert Allan – age 24 – Signalman (2327586) 5 Searchlight Brigade Signals, Royal Corps of Signals.
The Brigade was formed as a searchlight brigade to protect the British Expeditionary Force's bases just before the Battle of France. Robert was killed during the evacuation from the French coast.
Born 1916 at Ashiestiel Farm Cottages in Caddonfoot. Selkirkshire.
Son of Elizabeth (Allan) Turnbull of “Lauder”, Channelkirk. She had married John Turnbull in 1930 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action between 28 May 1940 and 2 June 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial in Midlothian.


ANDREW A. ANDERSON, COMMANDOS
Andrew Alexander Anderson – age 22 – Private (3196988) King's Own Scottish Borderers and 3 Commando.
Aleck enlisted in the KOSB in 1940 and volunteered for Commando training. He joined the raid on Vaasgo in Norway in December 1941. His Commando landed to assault the coastal battery near Berneval in support of the raid on Dieppe in August 1942 but they came under heavy fire and managed only to pin down the battery rather than destroy it. Aleck was buried at Quend Plage and was re-interred at Abbelville in September 1946.
Born 1920 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of Andrew and Euphemia (Young) Anderson of Headshaw, Oxton, Channelkirk.
Killed in Action on 19 August 1942 and buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
