D Division, Edinburgh City Police
Location: Haymarket Police Station

Thanks to John Duncan of Newbattle for providing us with this photograph.

A very useful plaque showing those who served as well as those who died.

LCE. CORP. D. HILL, CAMERON HIGHLANDERS

The name of David Hill was added to the Stow Parish War Memorial in Midlothian in 2012 by his relative Danny Miles as:

L.CPL. DAVID HILL, CAMERONS

David Hill – age 25 – Lance Corporal (S/18675) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
David was a police constable with Edinburgh City Police and was living at 13 Saunders Street, Edinburgh when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October.
Born 1891 in West Calder, Midlothian. Son of William and Agnes (Hamilton) Hill of Ferniehirst Cottages, Stow and of Smailholm Mains, Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 13 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Named on the Stenton Parish War Memorial in East Lothian as:

THOMAS BELL
Thomas Bell – age 22 – Private (23168) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a constable in the “D” Division of the Edinburgh City Police Force when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in September 1915.
Born 1893 in Spott, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Elizabeth (Veitch) Bell (died 1914) and of George Dickson Bell of Floral Cottage, Beil, Stenton.
Missing in Action on 27 February 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
