These war memorials will have been moved from their original Portree school buildings to the 1960s concrete Portee High School and when I visited the school during 2007 the school was to move to a new school /public library complex nearby . The war memorials for the Great War , WW2 and Korean Campaign were located in the entrance area to the High School .
Ive not been to see where they are located in the new Portee High School/ Portree library building but they should be placed similarly .
Pte A M Annan was the casualty from the Korean Campaign and his name is listed on the town's war memorial in Portree .

Air Ministry, 5th November, 1943. The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying operations against the enemy: — Distinguished Service Order. Flying Officer Granville WILSON, D.F.C., D.F.M. (141094), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 7 Squadron. Distinguished Flying Medal. 655125 Flight Sergeant Bernard Nicholas MULHOLLAND, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 7 Squadron. 984913 Flight Sergeant William Ford Watson PORTEOUS, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 7 Squadron. This officer and airmen were pilot, mid-upper gunner and air bomber respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Hanover one night in September, 1943. On the run up to the target the bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Four members of the crew were wounded and much essential equipment was rendered unserviceable. In spite of this, Flying Officer Wilson resolutely held to his course, enabling Flight Sergeant Porteous to execute a successful bombing attack. On leaving the target, the bomber was intercepted by a fighter which attacked with great persistence. Nevertheless, Flying Officer Wilson succeeded in evading the fighter, being greatly assisted by Flight Sergeant Mulholland who kept his captain fully informed of the attackers movements. On the return flight. Flight Sergeant Porteous assumed the duties of navigator and executed his task with skill. These members of aircraft's crew displayed great courage, skill and tenacity in the most trying circumstances.

Distinguished Service Order. Acting Flight Lieutenant William Ford Watson PORTEOUS, D.F.M. (171282), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 7 Squadron. There is a Wikipedia page for Wing Commander James Fraser Barron RNZAF
On the night of 19/20 May 1944, while acting as master bomber (his 79th sortie in all), Barron was directing an attack on railway yards at Le Mans, France. What exactly happened is debated, but a collision with his deputy's aircraft is considered the most likely event. The 15 men on the two 7 Squadron aircraft were all killed. _________________ Ken |
