The small Kirkcudbrightshire village of Borgue is built along the arms of the T-junction that forms its only streets. The Parish War Memorial stands at the north end of the village in the front garden area of Borgue Hotel.

There are some interesting carvings on this memorial. A name on a new panel has been added since Stewartry took his photo (when was that taken?). There is also an additional name panel on the other side of the memorial, which I have now photographed.

Another gravestone from Borgue churchyard.

We often think of the loss of youth during the great war but these brothers were 36 and 39 at the time of their deaths. The gravestone is a little difficult to read without a hi-res copy so I will transcribe the relevant parts.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. A. 32.
Cemetery: BROWN’S COPSE CEMETERY, ROEUX

Also Thomas his son, Setge Bty RGA. Killed in action with the Balkan forces 18th September 1918 aged 39 years. Interred in Janes Military cemetery Greece.

Name: BROWN, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Corporal
Regiment/Service: Royal Garrison Artillery
Unit Text: 138th Siege Bty.
Age: 38
Date of Death: 18/09/1918

The death of a SAMUEL TWINAME age 33 was registered in March Q 1944 at Durham South East, which included Hartlepool.
If this is the same man it looks as though he may have been discharged prior to his death???
