F/O Burns DFM was air gunner on Lancaster ED626 PM-G of 103 Sqn.
The airplane crashed 1-4-1943 in the Netherlands in the vicinity of Hulshorst.
He was the son of George Jeffrey and Annie Elizabeth Burns of Glasgow; brother of Fl/Sgt George Jeffrey Burns.
He is commemorated on the Memorial Queens Park Secundary School.
I am looking for more information about this man.
Maybe a photo of him and/or the crew.
Who can hel me out? |

Unfortunately I do not have any photographs of him or his crew but in Ian Tavender’s book : The Distinguished Flying Medal Second World War, his DFM citation is recorded as :-
BURNS, Ian Crawford 746939 Sergeant, No. 144 Sqn
LG 22/8/1941 : Sorties 34, Flying hours 199.25 W.Op/Air Gnr.
For continuous gallantry and devotion to duty during flights into enemy territory. All tasks undertaken by this NCO have been conscientiously carried out and his work, both in the air and on the ground, has been of a very high order. On the night of 12th/13th March 1941, the aircraft in which he was operator was badly damaged over Berlin. The return flight was made under very trying conditions, the port petrol tank having been pierced and a continuous loss of petrol resulting, the last 40 miles being carried out on one engine., The captain reported that Sergeant Burns’ cheerfulness had been a great inspiration and help during the return flight.
25th. June 1941
