|

Hi
I have two problems.
Firstly, I am getting very frustrated with Scotland's People Service returns for the lack of information they hold.
Here is are two examples:
850462 Bdr. Casey John 25 Scotland 11.8.42 Hong Kong Diptheria
3324879 Pte Burke Thomas 29 Scotland On or shortly after 13.1.1942 Malaya Presumed killed in action Category "C"
Neither extract gives an indication of where in Scotland nor next of kin. Is this normal?
I have not been able to get a definition of what Category "C" means
Can you help with either of these?
Secondly, the man I believe to be my husband's Dad, married for the first time in Glasgow 30.12.1940. His name was Dominic Cunningham Casey b.14.4.1922. The wedding cert states "Gunner RA now on war service". It would appear that the Royal Artillery do not have a record of him. I should appreciate suggestions how to prove he was in the army.
Many thanks

Sorry Daisy - I missed your original post.
Re: Casey and Burke
CWGC has
BOMBARDIER JOHN CASEY
Service Number: 850462
8 Coast Regt. Royal Artillery
Age 25 years old
Died 11 August 1942 and buried in Argyll Street Cemetery, Hong Kong.
Re-interred in SAI WAN WAR CEMETERY, Hong Kong in June 1947.
There is a Japanese Prisoner of War Record Card on Ancestry which has his
DoB as 26/12/1918 in Glasgow. Father Patrick Mother Agnis (sic)
Contact Mrs A.K. Casey, 77 Warriston Crescent, Carntyne, Glasgow.
(A Patrick Casey married Agnes Catherine Hull in Milton, Glasgow in 1914.)
The Glasgow Roll of Honour has – John Stephen Casey of 77 Warriston Crescent.
Scotlandspeople has a John Stephen Casey born 1919 in Dennistoun Glasgow. (a late December birth registered in the New Year)
CWGC has
PRIVATE THOMAS BURKE
Service Number: 3324879
2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Age 29 years old (= c.1913)
Son of John Burke, and of Mary Burke, of Glasgow.
Died 13 January 1942
SINGAPORE MEMORIAL
The Glasgow Roll of Honour has Thomas Burke of 315 Dalmarnock Road.
The Army Roll of Honour gives his birthplace as Glasgow but there are too many listed by Scotlandspeople to make identification easy. However there are two in 1912 in Bridgeton.
2nd Battalion was deployed to Malaya and Singapore, where it suffered heavy losses covering 11th Indian Division’s retreat to Singapore in 1942. The battalion finally had to surrender in Singapore in February 1942.
Hope this helps. _________________ Ken |

Hi Paul,
I have only just discovered this site so I shall make a point of reading the guide you mentioned.
Regarding Dominic Casey. He is a problem. He went off to war but never came back. His wife applied to have the marriage annulled on the assumption that he had been killed during the war and the family had not been notified.
However, I have strong reasons to believe he went AWOL at Singapore, changed his name and spent the rest of the war and the years until he died under another name. Hence the need to establish Dominic Casey's war service. |

Hi
AWOL is a term used for temporary unauthorised absence from duty - typically up to 30 days but probably much less in times of war.
If it was believed that he had died, he would be listed on CWGC site and he is not.
In the circumstances you describe, he would have been posted as a deserter. I know of some sources listing deserters from WW1 but I have never come across anything from WW2. Perhaps our old friend google might come up with something if you search for WW2 Army deserters.
Good luck |
