I've found a reference to this man being born in Scotland in 1910 and his wife had a Tain connection but has anyone come across him on a memorial?
DALYELL-STEAD, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieut-Commander
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.S. Formidable
Age: 31
Date of Death: 28/03/1941
Awards: D S O
Additional information: Son of John E. and Berthe M. Stead; husband of Rosemary Dalyell-Stead (nee MacIver Ritchie), of Tain, Ross and Cromarty.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 1, Panel 6.
Memorial: LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL
He died at the Battle of Cape Matapan in 1941 and his name crops up on the internet in relation to the battle but I can't find any refrences to him in Scotland.
Thanks

Thanks Ken
Not born in Scotland then. Many thanks for confirming that. I doubt he'll be on any Scottish war memorial.
Note that tomorrow will be the seventieth anniversary of his death.
Kind regards

He was in Headingley, Leeds in the 1911 census; birthplace listed as Harrogate. The parents' names confirm that the family name was indeed Stead, and that Dalyell was John's middle name. No hyphens.

That's interesting about the name. All refrences I've found of him call him Dalyell-Stead. I wonder if he chose to hyphenate it himself? If he joined the Navy as a young man it would have been in the 1920's at the height of the double-barrelling of names.
Thanks for the extra checks on him Ken and ADP. Knaresborough and Harrogate are near neighbours so he's a Yorkshireman, not a Scot.
Thanks
