Abbey Church War Memorials
Greenside Parish Church
Edinburgh
The Abbey Church has now been demolished. The memorials were moved to Greenside Parish Church in 1975 when the congregations merged.
The site of the former Abbey Church is now occupied by sheltered accomodation.

These very large brass memorials are mounted on the walls of the stairs up to the balcony in the church.

From “The Scotsman” 21st February 1921
ABBEY PARISH CHURCH
Yesterday afternoon, in presence of a large congregation, there were unveiled in the Abbey Parish Church, Edinburgh, two memorial tablets, containing the names of 123 members and adherents who made the supreme sacrifice in the European War: The tablets, which are artistically executed in brass by Messrs Alexander Kirkwood & Son, and designed by Mr John Sandilands, occupy an appropriate place on the wall of the interior of the church.
The unveiling and dedication ceremony was impressively performed by Lieutenant-General Sir Francis J. Davies, K.C.B. K.C.M.G., General Officer: Commanding-in-Chief, Scotland. The Rev. Dr Wallace Williamson, preaching from Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 19, “Fellow-citizens with the saints,” commented on the spirit that inspired our soldiers—a spirit that made them victorious in battle and Conquerors even in the hour of death. They were among the great and noble host of martyrs who fought for God and man. They were not dead, those whom we mourned, but entered upon a larger and a richer experience, Therefore, it was our privilege to rejoice and be glad, remembering their life of sacrifice and their death of glory, remembering that they were fellow-citizens with the saints. The Rev. Archibald Morrison, minister of the Abbey Parish, conducted the devotional part of the service.
The roll of honour of the Abbey Church, containing the names of 662 men who served in the war, was also place in position in the vestibule. The roll, which is executed on two parchment scrolls, was the handiwork of Miss, Ella M’Kinnell, and the gift of Mrs M’Kinnell .
I wonder what happened to the scrolls with the 662 names? I fear this valuable record of war service for this part of Edinburgh is long gone... |

Is there a chance that the City Archives hold it? |
