There are two Edward Watsons died in Scotland in 1918. One of them was one year old, the other was less than a year. Neither of them are obviously your man.
His death will have been registered in England since that's where he died. You'd need to order the death certificate. |

There were a number of Edward Watson whose death was registered in England first quarter of 1918 including a 27 year old in Peterborough and (my best guess) a 42 year old in Farnham. That would be convenient for the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. If so, the ref is 2 a 252.
I will move the job of photographing in Sanquhar up my priority list.

This man is commemorated by CWGC.
The details given in the entry is that supplied to CWGC. The headstone, if CWGC, at Sanquhar will record the same.
The NOK have not added to that through the verification system.

Still worth ordering the death certificate in order to confirm the correct forename. |

I've looked further at this same book and Page 265 relates to the Royal Flying Corps deaths for 27 JANUARY 1918 :
AM 11 E. Watson , Rec * Depot (RFC), UK
*
Rec Depot means " RECRUITS DEPOT "
This may help you Adam so a death in the UK at Recruit stage
in the RFC
.

This publication says Rec Depot but the CWGC has him listed as Jim says " F Watson Reserve Depot RFC " and not "E Watson Rec Depot ....
The Abbreviations cover Rec Depot = Recruits Depot and Res Depot = Reserve Depot . It may be a transcription error !

Re my first entry and Page 105 of the Airmen died in the Great War 1914 -1918 compiled by Chris Hobson it should have read :
WATSON , AM11 , Edward , ( 119615) , Rec Depot , 27 /1/ 1918 , buried at Sanquar , Dumfries
yes 27 January 1918 death date ....
The error was mine . not the computer !..

Strange that the CWGC record Watson as F Watson and this publication records him as Edward Watson .
Then the variation of Res Depot in the CWGC index and Rec Depot in this Publication
.

Adam
As advised earlier, the details given by CWGC are those shown in the Roll ie., F Watson, and are those in the original Register. He is not a Non Comm.
If this information was wrong the family did not seek to change it, nor add to it. There are many reasons for this not being done. In this case his parents may have been dead, although his wife was not. He may have resided in England and not lived at Sanquhar for many years.
The family headstone ( in-laws) shows that Edward Watson died at Aldershot on 27th January 1918. Contact will have been made with the family regarding a war grave headstone, but they have declined the offer.
A check will be made at CWGC, I will advise the outcome.
If the check does not allow for change of the record, would you be prepared to source his D Cert ?
I think there is little doubt he is-

Adam
All documentation at CWGC gives the initial as F.
Let me know if you obtain the D Cert and it could be looked at again. _________________ Jim

Pension Card and Soldiers Effects both list this man as Edward Watson.
This can probably be taken to CWGC to have their records amended. |
