Brass plaque to 2nd Lt George Baird Bayley of the 2nd Bn KOSB. Killed at the First Battle of Ypres 24th October, 1914.

"A massive brass tablet has been erected in Stenton Parish Church to the memory of Lieutenant George B, Bayley, only son of Mr Isaac F. Bayley, The Halls, Dunbar, who fell at Ypres in October, 1914"

George Baird Bayley – age 20 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was educated at Cheltenham College and at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in the KOSB in January 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914 but he was wounded at Le Cateau at the end of the month and he was invalided home. George had only just rejoined his battalion when he was killed at Ypres.
Born 1894 in Spott, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Isaac Fenton Bayley and of Grace Jane (Pott) Bayley of The Halls, Spott.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium
Also named on the adjacent Stenton Parish and Spott Parish War Memorials. _________________ Ken |
