The recently released Register of Soldiers Effects, makes a useful new resource (available on ancestry) and is especially useful when compared with a soldier's will on Scotland's People. Wills for English soldiers are also available but you have to pay for those, even if they served in a Scottish Regiment, the soldier's will may have found it's way to the English pile (I found one such).
The Register of Soldiers effects - I have looked up quite a few now, is really for the disposal of the net balance of his Pay account and records who any credit balance was sent to or advertised as unclaimed. If the balance was in debit, there was nothing to pay, so at least in the few I have seen, no NOK was recorded.
