|
|
Since embarking on the picture taking/research I have noticed that many of the 'Parish' Memorials are at/within the Parish Church.
I just wondered if there were any views on where these should be posted?
I don't suppose they are civic - so in the church section but specifically refer to them being the Parish Memorial? |

I have always posted memorials in the church grounds or on the church wall as civic memorials. The ones inside the church I have entered as church memorials. But that's just me! |

Aye, I see the logic there Ian.
Mods - any consensus/preference on this? Just for the tidying up side of things.
cheers. |

That's the rule I try to follow but you always find exceptions so I think you need to take each memorial on its own merits. For example Balmaghie and Lochrutton both have memorials on the outside wall of a church and there are no other civic memorials, so I posted these under civic. However Canonbie church also has an external plaque but there is a very impressive civic memorial nearby, so I posted the church one as a church memorial.
Colvend has a civic memorial in the churchyard and 2 memorials on the outside church wall just behind (!) so I posted the latter as church. The coverage of each memorial is somewhat different, so perhaps it is me that has got it wrong?

This is how I see it. If a plaque in a church is for a congregation or an individual it should come under church. If there is only one memorial for a community and it is inside the church that should come under civic.
It may be that all the people listed are also members of the congregation but that isn't always the case. E.g. In Crammond in Edinburgh the civic memorial is in the Parish Church so it should come under Civic not church.
Just because a memorial is outside it doesn't mean that the memorial is a civic one though. I know of two churches in Edinburgh which have tablets on the outside wall but are for the congregation (Polwarth and Duddingston) another one has a memorial in its grounds but is also for the congregation (Criagmillar Park) All three are outside but should be classed as church memorials.
The Blackhall, Granton, Corstorphine and Colinton Memorials also sit next to or near churches but they are civic memorials
I hope this helps

Thanks for the input.
Will take each on its merits and with any other relevant information post accordingly (as I think).
cheers. |
