UKNIWM Ref: 44396
Location: the memorial is set into the inside wall of the village cemetery at OS Map Ref NX 062 689. This is a bit unusual for a civic memorial being in the form of a stone tablet and also its location. While this protection has undoubtedly saved it from the ravages of seaspray, it is a pity that it is not in a more prominent position such as anywhere along the sea front. There is a large tourist lay-by/picnic spot just about 30 yards away and is the best place to park.

I think you are right that this is the third Trueman.
Name: TRUEMAN
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Army Service Corps
Unit Text: 1st Base Mechanical Transport Depot
Date of Death: 27/08/1918
Service No: M/331969
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Q. V. H. 16.
Cemetery: ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN
SNWM shows him as born in Stranraer. Don't know if he was a brother or cousing or what but what are the chances of 2 Truemans from the same town dying on the same day? They are buried in different cemetaries so I am not sure that they were together when they died. Would love to know the story though. |

The Wigtownshire Free Press has been indexed, so it should make uncovering the story more straight forward. I think the indexes are held at Castle Douglas Library (definitely at the Ewart, Dumfries) and the paper is availabe on microfiche.
Happy hunting. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

Did not find the story behind them dying on the same day but I found this item in the Wigtownshire Free Press of 24th Feb 1916 to confirm that they were brothers.

According to RCAHMS "This war memorial was formerly located on the outside window ledge of the porch of the church."

The three Truemans were brothers - two did die on the same day from wounds but in different places. William is also named on Leswalt memorial since he had worked on a farm there. Their sister Annie is named on the Cairnryan Roll of Honour which was unveiled/rededicated on Saturday 17th September 2011 after many years in storage. |

Do have any more details about where the Roll has been and where it is now?
Thanks

That will be the Lochryan Church memorial http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5801&highlight=lochryan which has been in the archive store of Stranraer Museum. I knew it was to be relocated and I had asked to be informed so that I could attend the ceremony - so much for that. I think it is at the Cairnryan ferry terminal somewhere but it will be a few weeks before I can get across there to check it out.

MILROY, T. Private 49. CANADIAN REGIMENT.
I don't know why he's listed here but he's is listed on the New Luce Memorial. (but see below)
Thomas Milroy, Private (252132) 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Age 31.
Born 1886 in Inch, Wigtownshire. Son of Thomas and Mary (Murray) Milroy of High Mark, New Luce. Thomas was farming at Cantuar near Swift Current, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in January 1916.
Killed in action 30 October 1917 and buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
Also listed on the Inch Parish War Memorial, Wigtownshire.
Looking at the maps High Mark Farm is probably closer to Cairnryan than it is to it's "formal" address of New Luce. It's actually closer to Ballantrae in Ayrshire than to the others. _________________ Ken |
