Visited in 2005. Sory no photo. This is on the east side of the road, the manicured grass gives it away. Located in a tree lined section near a well-hidden church, 1" grid ref 560 520 on the B849 from Lochaline.
This WM commemorates the men of Ferenish district of Morvern parish, from places such as Dornavine, Glen Morvern and Drimmin. 12 names WW1 only.
Lochaline's WM is on UKNI and I didn't see it, seems to be the main WM for Morvern district/parish. |

I think I've found it on Google maps here:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Lochaline&sll=57.773968,-3.965635&sspn=0.022519,0.07699&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Lochaline,+Morvern,+Oban,+Argyll,+United+Kingdom&ll=56.598626,-5.969954&spn=0,359.92301&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=56.598748,-5.970093&panoid=IcLq7Elozx20-MyorsimOg&cbp=12,64.55,,0,-12.01
So I think it places it about NM 571 507
Thanks

Unfortunately looking at the Google Maps Street View image it looks like the memorial needed some tlc in the last year or so. Hopefully it is looking as good as new now.

I'm pretty sure this is the Morvern WM. I've found a reference to it being near Ferinish Church, Bonnavoulin. OS Ref NM 5640 5226. That matches John's description of it being near a church and the OS Ref is very near this spot on Google Maps.
Thanks

Actually with there being another memorial at Lochaline I don't know if this is the Morvern one so amending the title again.

Thanks to Jane Furlong at the UKNIWM for confirming that there is a different memorial at Lochaline so I think we'll stick with this one being the Drimmin memorial rather than the Morvern memorial.
Thanks

Just to confuse matters a little bit further the RCAHMS have an entry for this memorial on ScotlandsPlaces and call it something else
http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=134517
Bonnavoulin, Ferinish Church, War Memorial
Alternative Name(s) FERNISH CHURCH
Canmore ID 134517
Site Type WAR MEMORIAL (20TH CENTURY)
County ARGYLL
Parish MORVERN
Council HIGHLAND
NGR NM 5640 5226
Latitude, Longitude 56.598749N, 5.970159W
Just to confuse matters further this entry has Ferinish and Fernish and John calls it Ferenish.
So we have Bonnavulin, Drimmin and Ferenish / Ferinish / Fernish for this memorial.
It seems to cover the village at Bonnavulin but is located at Drimmin where the former parish church is. Howver the inscription although faded does say "Ferenish"
That means I am going to rename this thread yet again to:
Ferenish District (area), Drimmin (location), Morvern (parish)
Thanks

This is one of the men who don't appear on the memorial at Lochaline. As a soldier of the CEF with family in Edinburgh his link to the parish may have been too tenuous for Lochaline's memorial but not for this one.

He was born in Edinburgh according to his attestation papers and not married so it is not as if his wife was from the area. Both parents also born in Edinburgh.

I thought the PPCLI was only formed from former British Army soldiers but it shows here that he had not served in the army before he enlisted.
I see his father has WS after his name so he was an Edinburgh solicitor.
Given his Edinburgh background and his father's occupation he may be listed on one of the public school memorials in the City.
Thanks

The official website has
Quote: | In just over a week since it's birth the Regiment grew to 1,098 all ranks, with 1,049 of those members having seen previous service in South Africa or in the forces of the British Empire. |
So it looks as if they were mainly ex-serviceman but not exclusively. his form says he belonged to the "Active Militia", whatever that was.
