Previously posted on the Scottish War Graves project it has now been moved here where it is more appropriate. This is not strictly a war memorial as he did not die in war but is a memorial to a military man.
The memorial is Crocketford Village Hall at OS Map Ref NX 831 728. I don't know any more about the man or memorial other than the inscription on the gateposts which reads..........
Erected by public subscription in memory of Archibald Chalmers MA MB GM Captain RAMC who died at Crocketford on 7th January 1923 aged 57 years in recognition of his manifold unsparing and devoted service to the people of this countryside among whom he practised as a physician for nearly a quarter of a century. In every man there openeth a high way and a low and every man decideth the way his soul shall go.

In terms of the national guidelines this is not a valid war memorial, although I can fully understand why it is regarded locally as such, and it is interesting.
The reason it is not valid is because the hall was erected due to his work as a Doctor, not because of his military career.
It would be a war memorial if the reverse was the case.
It is an interesting line in terms of definitions, and onr which is quite a fine line to draw. |
