He did say that was part of the name. I don't think we have the Lewis memorial(s) on the forum yet.
Just thought it would be a new member if we could tell him anything.

What I meant was I don't there's anyone with that as part of their name that won the Victoria Cross.
I'm also not aware of any VC winners from the Isle of Lewis. |

He doesn't say if this Gillen died or not.
The lewis connection, the rank and the name may be all correct but the VC may be a red herring.
The Camerons actually have only four VCs. Up until the Boer War it was one of those regiments which frowned on awarding medals. They were just doing their jobs. Acts of gallantry were expected of soldiers!
Donald Dickson FARMER 1st Bn, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1900
In the Great War three were awarded
Angus Falconer DOUGLAS-HAMILTON 6th Bn, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1915
James Dalgleish POLLOCK 5th Bn, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1915
Ross TOLLERTON 1st Bn, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1914
That's not to say he was awarded a VC in another regiment and was a Major in the Camerons.

He is not in the Loyal Lewis Roll of Honour published in 1920.
This book listed practically all those who served in the First World War that came from the Isle of Lewis. |
