Greetings from another new member from Canada. Am looking for info in regards to who was involved in the construction and and dedication of the monument after the 1914-18 war. My father was Pte John McNair of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, a former dockworker and member of the Old Contemptables assoc in Aberdeen. He was also the unofficial custodian of the dockers memorial until his death in 1954. This is a great site, you should be proud. regards Henry McNair _________________ trying to find info on aberdeen dockers war memorial, my father was involved in the fundraising for this project. |

The memorial was unveiled on Remembrance Day 1921. According to the Scotsman of 12th November 1921 the donor was a Mr George Cooper, stevedore. It doesn't give any other details of who built it.
Sir James Taggart was at the unveiling which was done by Bishop Deane of the Episcopal Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney.
You best bet is to try and find an archive with Aberdeen papers from 12th November 1921 which I'm sure will give a lot more detail.
Regards
Adam |

Thank you Adam for your quick reply to my query on the above memorial. I will try a follow up on the archives of some of the local newspapers, if they are still in circulation. I do have some photos of my father having to do with the cleaning and placing of wreaths on the memorial, and also a photo of some former dockers marching in a remembrance parade in 1941. I can send them to you if you want them, regards Henry McNair _________________ trying to find info on aberdeen dockers war memorial, my father was involved in the fundraising for this project. |
