Hello everyone,
Firstly, thank you for allowing me to let everyone know about my forthcoming book.
For over four years, I have been researching and writing a book on the men and women from my home village of Auchencairn (south-west Scotland) who served during the First World War. The book is now finished and is with the printers.
Answering the Call: Auchencairn and the First World War
Hardback, with jacket cover
256 pages
10 maps and over 100 photographs (b&w and colour)
£15.00 (plus postage and packing)
The main focus of the book is the lives and fate of those who died; the eighteen men named on the village memorial and seventeen men with links to Auchencairn who are commemorated on memorials elsewhere. However, many stories tell of those wounded in action, while others relate the deeds of those recognised for gallantry in the field or meritorious service towards the war effort. In all, more than 150 men and women from Auchencairn served during WW1; a complete nominal roll details each person’s connection to Auchencairn, along with a summary of their war service. The book is arranged by ‘theatre of war’, with each set of stories placed in context by an introduction summarising that particular period and area of the war.
In addition to the information given on this SWMP site and the Scottish War Graves Project, further details can be found on my Sons of Galloway site.
If anyone is interested in buying a copy of this book, then please let me know (either by posting on this thread or by PM). If there is sufficient interest, I will increase my order for the print run. I am self-publishing and so hope to get a fairly accurate estimate of the numbers required.
The Scottish War Memorials Project and some individual members are duly acknowledged for their contribution to my research.
Thank you,

I'm interested in a copy for myself.
Also, if you have enough copies we would like to take a few to the SAFHS conference in Aberdeen next month to sell on your behalf - will it be available then? |

Put me down for one. We can also take some to the Dumfries FHS fair in July if you are not going yourself. Smart's bookshop in Castle Douglas are always looking for local books to add to their wide range for sale.

A signed copy for me Stuart. As well as being of interest I must support members of the project. |

Thank you very much for your replies - makes it all worthwhile knowing that there are a few people interested enough to want a copy.
The book should be available by the end of April (beginning of May at the latest). David, unfortunately it is unlikely to be ready for the SAFHS conference in Aberdeen. However, thank you for your kind offer to sell it on my behalf, it is much appreciated (self-publishing can makes a big dent in your bank balance and so every book sold will make a difference).
Mark, the gesture of support is also appreciated; hopefully there will be lots in it of interest. Indeed, with your Perthshire link, you may be interested in the story of the only 1st Black Watch officer to come through the opening three months of the war unscathed. He survived the war, finishing up as a Brigadier-General (Lieutenant in August 1914) and commanded the 51st Highland Division in WW2. It includes previously unpublished photos.
There are many other stories of men (and two women) who served and returned. They include a knighthood for services on behalf of fellow POWs, an MBE, a Tank Corps MC and Bar, one DCM (KOSB) and three MMs: Glasgow Highlanders, HLI (with citation), Machine Gun Corps (with 29th Div certificate) and Royal Engineers.
I will be in touch with those who have ordered copies once the books arrive.
All the best,

Stuart
It's a shame that the books will not be ready for Aberdeen but perhaps we could take some promotional material for you so we can advertise its publication in the near future.
You can let either myself of David know if you have any ideas how we could do this.
Cheers

Hello everyone,
Pleased to say that my book arrived at the end of last week and so am now in the process of packing and posting to all those who pre-ordered a copy. I will send a PM with my address and bank details; please let me know your addresses and whether you wish to pay by cheque or online by bank transfer. The price works out as £16.77, including £1.77 postage. (Teddy, your cheque arrived last week and so your copy is already on its way - please let me know that you receive it okay).
I hope you all feel that the book shows that I have made a good effort in remembering the men and women from my village. And very many thanks for your support in purchasing a copy, it is very much appreciated.
(Adam, I wasn't able to get anything sorted out for Aberdeen but will try and do something in the next couple of weeks, in case you have other events planned. Thank you for the offer.).
Best wishes,

I have at last had a chance to have a good read of the book I received. Excellent quality and with such a level of detail that it makes me wonder where all the info came from. Thanks for the credit by the way. This will be an excellent reference book for years to come.
I have edited the title of this thread by the way to include Auchencairn.

Just a little message to say thank you to all those members who ordered a copy of my book; all monies have been received and, fingers crossed, all the books have arrived safely.
Another thank you for all the positive comments received on both the quality of the production and its content. Hopefully, the book has met the original criteria: an accurate historical military record and a warm, personal remembrance of the men and women who served.
Best wishes,
