Courier & Advertiser (Angus & Mearns edition ) Wednesday 28 April 2010 :
Memorial to "father of radar "
A pair of "sculptural" developments for Brechin and Montrose have taken a significant step forward with the submission of a formal planning applications.
The Watson-Watt Society of Brechin has formally applied for planning permission for a memorial to the man known as "The Father of Radar".
It signals another step towards the creation of a £50,000 memorial to Brechin's most famous son, Robert Watson-Watt.
A society spokesman said yesterday that should planning permission be granted for the statue to be erected on a corner of St Ninian's Park, opposite the city library, it would show potential sponsors what was being proposed .
The society has already commissioned a bronze maquette or scale model statue, designed by sculptor Alan Herriot, which is the same in every detail as the full scale version and which has been on public display in the library - 400 yards from where Watson-Watt was born in Union Street .
It depicts Watson-Watt with a Spitfire in one hand and a radar transmitter in the other.
(The Montrose story does not relate to matters that we are interested in so I ended at the para re Brechin and Robert Watson-Watt ).
