West Kilbride - Cunninghame District
UKNIWM Ref No. 44529

The West Kilbride war memorial is a simple freestone cross on a low tapering pedestal which stands on three octagonal steps. A carved wreath is set over the cross head. The memorial stands in a small paved garden set apart from the road by a low freestone wall and iron railings. It stands at the road junction between Yerton Brae and Bowfield Road.
The memorial originally did not have any names listed but in 2001 four large black granite memorial tablets were erected, adjacent to the cross, listing the names of the WWI dead on three panels, and the WWII dead on one panel in gold lettering. The upgrading of the memorial was the result of the painstaking reasearch and campaigning work of local resident Bill McSkimming.
There is a report of the unveiling ceremony for the new memorial on 3rd June 2001 here:

I found out over the weekend that a local man to West Kilbrides read that there was a time capsule buried beneath the memorial and got permission to dig up the base to retrieve it. Nothing was found.

If anyone can get into the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald newspaper office they may be able to shed light on this as they covered the story last year.

Jim

I see the inscription is to Kilmacolm but this is listed as west Kilbride. Can you clarify if this is the west kilbride memorial?

I also notice how many officers there are listed on a civic memorial. I don't think I've seen so many lieutenants other than on a public school memorial.

Regards

Adam

Just as well someones keeping an eye on us, don't know how that happened! I've removed the offending pics. I can't find the proper pics for West Kilbride now but I'll post them as soon as I find them.

The 'DR.' listed for Captain William Turner does appear to stand for 'Doctor'.

Thought I might also post this pic of a grave I found in Linn Park Cemetery in Glasgow which seems to suggest this man might have been missed from the West Kilbride memorial.
According to the grave Second Lieutenant David Speirs of the Royal Scots Fusiliers died of illness contracted through military service.
His mother died when he was two and is buried in West Kilbride, and his father died after the war and is also buried in West Kilbride. I managed to track down his birth certificate and it turns out he was born and registered in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow. Nevertheless his family clearly must have had strong ties for his parents to be buried there, it seems a possibility that he was living there as a child when his mother died, and the fact that he joined the R.S.F. would seem to suggest that he may also have felt strong ties with the area.

Thanks Mark, thats the man. It's strange I tried a few times to find him again on the CWGC site and failed after quite a few attempts.
Another strange thing is that I've searched around the cemetery and can't find his grave. According to the reference the CWGC give it should be in the vicinity of the family gravestone but it isn't there. I was wondering if this means the family actually replaced the CWGC headstone with their own? But this surely must be highly unlikely. The other possibility is that it has been removed temporarily for restoration or repair. I'll keep looking.

That's his gravestone pictured above, surely?

In this instance there won't be a CWGC headsyone as the family have provided their own. I'm sure this was the position with home burials. The family could have a CWGC headstone if they wanted, but it wasn't compulsory. If, however, the existing headstone has worn away or been destroyed then the CWGC can erect one of theirs.

I came across another grave in the local cemetery today with West Kilbride connections.
Lance Corporal William Kerr appears to have been recorded on the West Kilbride memorial but there is no mention of his brother Sergeant Daniel Kerr who I would have thought must also have West Kilbride connections. Unfortunately I've had no luck tracking down a birth certificate.

My Name is Bill McSkimming, New to S.N.W.M.F. and this is my First Post!West Kilbride Old War Memorial never had any names placed on it for the Two World Wars. This was always a mystery to me so in May 2000 I started a campaign to erect a New War Memorial or at least upgrade the old one. I ran articles in the regional papers, and formed a committee named The West Kilbride War Memorial Trust and opened a bank account in that name, a vacant shop in the village was used as the campaign head quarters rent free. Old Photographs of the men who were killed in the First War and their details I posted in the shop window, to hold the Village intrest. Aided by the Trust committee, members of the public, local buisnesses, and many others, funds came rolling in and the campaign took off, Fund Raising dances contributed generously to the funds.

Meanwhile discussions with the North Ayrshire Council, Co-Operative Monumental Scluptors Glasgow / Ardrossan were going on about the cost shape / Type etc. While this was going on research was going on and I travelled to many places from Edinburgh to Ayr researching the names of the Fallen, looking at Rolls of Honour from Parish Records and Regional Paper Rolls of Honour in libraries, Archives, etc Cemeteries also provided details that C.W.G.C. and or S.N.W.M. did not have and in many cases I helped give them many details, correct spelling of Names, age, next of kin etc. By this time I had become a Life member of Friends of War Memorials and later a regional volunteer for the UKNIWM and got West Kilbride its Number 44529 the first of many in North Ayrshire.

Much more to follow in my next post. Regards to all members. Bill

Researching West Kilbride Old War Memorial, took me like I said to many places. One such place was the Ayrshire Archives, in AYR. They have loads of interesting material there. I found the Parish Records and Roll Of Honour and a Casualty book of West Kilbride during the First War and before. Sadly many men were missed for various reasons. On researching these records believe it or not I found my Biological Grandfather, a grandfather I had never heard of , who left my Gran with three children (one of whom was my Father, and he was a prisoner in W.W.2 ) and went to Canada to make his fortune
My Grandfather Joined up on the 2nd Jan. 1915 with the 10th Battalion Canadians (Alberta Regt.) he was gassed at Passchendaele and killed 3rd Sep. 1918 at Canal du Nord. He is buried in Queant Road Cemetery Buissy., and I have visited his grave and many others from West Kilbride. His name is in the Parish Records. He was 434180 Pte., William Smith 10th Batt, C.E.F..Born Kilwinning.
He is also on Kilwinning War Memorial, because I put him there 2/3 years ago. Bill McSkimming.
