Hi can anyone help identify which war memorial the following soldier is commemorated on:-
240882 Private David Hunter Royal Scots Fusiliers. Killed in action 26th October 1917. Lived Coylton, Ayrshire.
There seems as far as I can see no record of his name on the Coylton or Ayr war memorials.
Thanks for any help. _________________ Collecting and researching to The Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st Foot). |

I also cannot find him on any Ayrshire memorial, civic or church. I thought he might be on the Schaw church (Drongan) memorial - but that has no names. We know that some soldiers do not appear on memorials for a variety of reasons, simply missed off by accident, at parents request etc but it could simply be that he did not meet the rules for the Coylton memorial set at the time. Perhaps the committee decided to list only those living in the parish at the time of enlistment? If you knew where he was living at the time, that might give a clue, as might any local newspaper report of his death.
Some men are listed on two or three memorials, in odd instances up to half a dozen or more, others are listed on none. That is not to say they were missed as they may have been deliberately not included. If you could find the minutes of the Coylton War Memorial Committee, they might also help explain it.
